If I am seeing your grey roof correctly, I think this could be perfect -- and it would de-emphasise the stone. I wouldn't paint the stone if you are going to be there for only two years; it might be the next owner's favourite feature.

I agree about the columns. But if you're only going to be in the house for two years, the only reason to change anything would be for resale. Talk to a local realtor about what makes sense in your area.

Changes to an impressive, architect-designed, multi-million dollar house should be commensurate with the value. I'd leave exterior remodelling to the next owner and concentrate now on a few cosmetic changes. You may want to hire a color consultant for the paint choices. The shrubs will need pruning before the painters start. Then install a lavish amount of blooming annuals when you put it up for sale in two years. Please post an update when you are finished with new paint.

By the way, you can check at city hall for copies of permits to see when the oddly-white columns were installed. My guess is that they were recent replacements for the 1984 originals.

I could not agree more... you are going to be there for a mere 2 years... consult a LOCAL realtor for color advice to paint the outside; change the columns ( or just paint them to match the house so they don't stand out too much... leave the stone walls alone... and put your money into cleaning up the landscaping - it's a cool house that a certain kind of person will want to put their own style onto... good luck!
