I agree with Home Interiors with Ease. After reading the comments and your concerns, this is what your thought process is:

Your door is recessed and you would like it to stand out more
You went with the gray trim, looking for a more cottage look

A red door, colors that Home Interiors with Ease suggested would look fabulous. Go one step further and do a high gloss also. Daring, eye catching and still evokes a cottage feel.

I feel all the other colors will pull from the cozy feel you are trying to build. Your home is a cozy, comfortable unit. I feel introducing another color will take away from that.

Agree with Home Interiors With Ease. Here's a visual of Wild Currant. It brightens up the dark doorway without introducing yet another colour. Simple and classic.. With a touch of drama.

Narrowing the choices down...

Below: This orangey deep red is SW Red Bay. Adds a pop! The charcoal trim, garage door chip and a piece of brick. The black represents the door hardware.

Some favour deep glossy green...but the door trim is grey and has to stay that way...it is a one piece baked on finish same as the windows.

Classic shiney black ...classy but with the door recessed into the alcove, with an over hang roof and no sun, I think it will look like a black hole.

For the blue lovers..Pale aqua...nice, but will fight the shake colour.

Gray...same as the rest of the trim...excuse me while I yawn....oh, sorry about that. Hmmnn where were we...?

Or above, back to a grayed aqua ...I kinda like this with the black hardware... It would have to be the same as the shakes colour.

I am still open for suggestions. I wish I could do a photoshop of what the colours would look like on the door. The white trim around the garage has been painted out to the gray as of yesterday. I will try to get a new picture tomorrow.

Just a pretty house I like..is in California. It sports a red, happy door. Maybe this IS the way to go indeed! Perks it up!

Above...our house back in February. Sorry about the work truck in the way...lot needs grading but you get the idea. The living areas are overlooking the nice view in the back. The front window is a guest bedroom. Another dull day in Ontario...

As the entry area is recessed and dark, paint the door and surround WHITE. Make sure the area is adequately lit (from above).

Good thought, but I can't paint the surround, Jbtanyderi. It is a newly installed baked on charcoal factory finish door frame and window side lights made to match the windows...and if I even could go white, there wouldn't be white anywhere else...:( The aluminum is maintenance free...as in no painting to do. Ever. Thank goodness! Lol But I can add white shirred sheers to the windows below the transoms, and an over drape to pull in evening. I will dress up the garage windows as well, the same.

Oh dear. Shouldn't have seen these images. Perhaps the way to go is the door painted the same colour as the shakes on the peak of the gable end... "Siding B" colour. The black hardware would pop...a black door knocker, maybe add two cast iron black urns over flowing with greenery and red geraniums etc. Called local Benjamin Moore store, and we don't have Wild Currant paint available. Drats. But I really like the Moroccan Red paint suggestion....!

BM should be able to match wild currant if you have sample or the manufacturer. I like the Moroccan too. I think picking a door color is hardest part. It is such an emotional thing. Good luck.

Blue or red would both look great.

Look at SW Rook Wood dark red...the color really needs to be saturated and rich. Would stay away from anything going orange or terra cotta will not give the same look. Remember you don't want to necessarily match the brick color.

Here are some SW reds to consider.

@Sharpkl. Yes it is hard, since you have to look at it every day, and it is what helps make a statement...without people even knowing you. Painting this door is a one-shot deal...the builders painters won't want to repaint it again, and The Mister says once the hardware goes on...it's a done deal. : / Aarrrggghh...the trouble is, I like so many of the suggestions!

HIwE...we can't get these paint colours in Canada. At least the thick SW paint deck I have doesn't list them. Our numbers start at 6000. Here are some colours my husband retrieved today from Benjamin Moore...

@Sharpkl...Cranberry coctail! Sounds refreshing! But as I recall, I had this colour on a house once...didn't like it. Larger, it was too pinky.

Our SW swatches end at 7083. :( I will go to a SW store today and ask if I am missing ...wait for it...playing with a full (colour) deck, lol!

I like the last combo you picked. I am glad you didn't go with white trim. Looks so nice the way it is.

Both very nice..the Raisen Torte might have a little more brown in it...I prefer a bit brighter...but very pretty.

Why isn't there a door wrap of pretty colors? Like the wraps they use on race cars. A film we could change at will or with the seasons.

@Sharpkl... What a wonderdul idea! Door wraps!! Why hasn't anyone come up with this idea yet? It would really be helpful for paint committment-phobics or people that like to try new colours without all the painting hassle.

Update: SSSSSSShhhhh! Here's a little sneak preview of Benjamin Moore "DInner Party" red that we chose for the front door. I love it with the brick and wood colour garage doors!
