Try your state agricultural department - you don't say what state you're in, but most or all of the southeastern states have departments that have information about controlling this dreadful stuff.

Your best option here is mechanical removal, cutting down the vines as fast as they grow if digging the roots out is not an option.

We don't have kudzu in NY but does it grow from a central woody point? If so, you should be able to cut it back near the ground and then stay on stop of new shoots popping out. If it spreads and roots across numerous point, however, this approach would not work well.

I think dealing with kudzu is a do it right the first time kind of deal. Pay to have a Bobcat tear it all out and be done with it. But when you do that, have a replanting idea that you start immediately, even if it's a groundcover. If this is a large area the loss of erosion control could be awful to deal with.

Solarization

One alternative explored by researchers at Clemson was the use of polyethylene sheeting for the solarization of Pureraria montana.
Solarization is the use of plastic sheets to block sunlight from
reaching the leaves of the plant, and therefore remove its energy
source. If kudzu is covered with polyethelene sheets for at least two
growing seasons, expansion is stopped and the bulk of the plant is
killed. This method can be used as an alternative to chemical methods of
control in restricted areas, or by private property owners who lack the
training needed to handle herbicides. However, solarization of kudzu is
not cost effective for large patches of Pueraria montana,
since ultraviolet light-resistant sheeting must be used to avoid
constant replacement of sun-damaged sheets. Therefore, solarization is
only a viable method for small patches in highly sensitive areas.

Hi Omelet. My area is not that small. Kudzu has a tendency to grow very quickly and get out of hand. We are going to try using a vinegar and salt solution, hitting multiple times and then let the area lie fallow before covering with a ground cover. Hopefully that will work.

Lorraine, how long does the salt take to work out of the soil? That seems like a soil killer that could take years to resolve. I am honestly asking--I'm a fairly newbee gardener/landscaper. What can you share?
