That's actually Lavender. And it is edible but needs using carefully due to its pronounced flavour.

floral; why do you think it's a lavender and not rosemary? From the photo of a young plant it looks to me as if it could be either.

Sparrow: If it is Rosemary, it's culinary usefulness is determined by how strong the herbal taste is in the leaves. "Culinary" Rosemary usually has a milder flavor, whereas some varieties can be very harsh.

I'm going by the colour, texture, the way the leaf margins roll under, the leaf length on the lower clusters, the branching and the overall habit. Only the OP can tell what it smells like but the two are entirely different to the nose.

Personally, I wouldn't worry about distinguishing between 'culinary' and any other Rosemary. I'd cook with any Rosemary variety and I use a great deal of it.

just touch it and smell your fingers you will know right away if it is rosemary or not.

I agree completely - any rosemary is edible, it's just a matter if it provides the degree of flavor you prefer.

GG - do you think it's Lavender in the OP's picture?

floral, with that degree of resolution and detail, I can't say for certain. And I am not used to growing either plant from tiny cuttings. But I am also, like you, leaning more toward lavender than rosemary and for many of the same reasons - pale coloring, leaf shape/structure. Rosemary typically has a defined center rib - lavender not so much and I don't see any evidence of this.

One would certainly be able to confirm one or the other by scent - both have very strong scents but nothing alike.
