Please help identify this plant in zone 5b Michigan

we just moved in and of course there are lots of surprise plants:) I can identify most of them- but not this one. the sprouts are quite large and you can see previous woody stalks that were cut back. looks like it may spread- but appears to be more shrubby than perennial... any idease?
