Garden redo has started :)

last modified: 10 years ago

The weather is still up and down but I've managed to move quite a few of the plants I plan to keep and replant back in

this bed with other perennials.I have to get it ready for tilling and adding in more soil.

I couldn't believe how big some of the clumps were. I do plan to move the bed out a bit just to keep it away from the wall for easy maintenance. I've bookmarked the thread here on GW/Houzz for all the suggestions for perennials. My go to post to check out what else I might want to add based on your helpful recommendations for my zone. http://forums.gardenweb.com/discussions/3666869/your-garden-pics?n=54. 2 weeks before I pick up my first order of perennials so hopefully I get the bed ready by then.

Wanted to share also that we finally have gotten the "old barn area" cleaned up which we've tried to get done for the past 2 years. I now have a big pile of top soil which was taken from that area and we salvaged most of the rocks that were part of the barn wall. The rocks will be added to the wall in the photo above.

As always, everything is a work in progress :)

Thanks Nancy. At least I know I don't have to pay to have soil brought in and can repurpose what we got from the old barn area. I'll definitely post pics as I progress and fingers crossed the weather doesn't drastically change.

That's what I need--a back hoe to prepare beds. What beautiful blue skies!

LOL mantis, that machine was a monster but did a great job. We've had great weather but late yesterday the rain moved in and much cooler temps forecasted for a couple of days.

Wow! My little projects are nothing compared to your project! My current one is about 12 ft. by 2 ft.

Cant wait to see the finished product .......and l agree you are lucky to have a backhoe to help . All 42 gardens here have been dug by hand (or should I say foot) in heavy heavy clay and then a little rototiller used ......largest bed is 16 x 50 ......took a long long time to get that one done and removing all the crap that people buried in the ground over the 100 plus years of people living on this property .Mind you it does not seem to matter where I dig here , stick a shovel in the ground and up comes all sorts of things. Found old bricks, stones , fencing , stove parts , glass, pottery , wire etc etc.You would think that they would have picked a single spot to drop their garbage but nooooooooo. My observation is that whereever it dropped it stayed and then they buried it . Seems this piece of land was not loved just used and abused for a very long time . From what we were told ,the house was rented in the late 70's early 80"s and I guess those people didnt want to pay fees at the dump so buried their bagged garbage in front of the house along the foundation !!!!!!!!!?????!!!!!!!! . 16 bags of garbage there . I discovered this when I went to dig to make a garden in front of our living room . Nicely bagged in green garbage bags which of course fell apart when I tried to remove them . Gardening can be such fun .

Not my backhoe but it sure was a good thing to have. I'm sure people don't realize that burying garbage contaminates well water. I was hoping that under the mound they buried an antique car but no such luck but was glad it was all soil and reusable. Our tractor is all set up for tilling. Just have a couple of personal things to attend to first and hopefully I can start tilling this week if the weather holds.
