Work in progress. Lighting question.

Last week I posted my fireplace and got some great suggestions. I'm still in the process of getting things and just got the go ahead from my hubby to look into lighting. We have a can light on either side of the fp. Should we do 3rd in front, a 3rd & 4th, or some kind of track lighting? I know I need a candle holder on the right - just haven't gotten that far yet. And the red candles don't show up inside the lanterns.

I would put 3 recessed lights closer to the stone fireplace. The light shinning down on the stone would create shadows on it which would add character as well as serve as general lighting. This is also known as decorative lighting. Use your can lighting for a more intimate feel.

Wall washer cans will sweep the stone with light as shown on Simone's post. You should group the three lanterns together on one side of the mantel, remove the small figurines, and place a moderate sized arrangement of some greenery on the other side. I still think the boxy cornices are a misfit for your space. Hoping you'll tackle them next. Keep tweaking!

Beautiful fireplace. The picture is too dark a d small for area. Replace with brighter colors and a little larger for scale. Always put groupings in odd numbers. Take lanterns and group together on one side. Remove all others. You might want to try small green plant on other end. Don't clutter. No track lites. Lighting seems fine unless this is your only light? Then add one more recessed.

So you all like this better? I know- green plant on the right. Real or fake? A bigger picture is going to have to wait awhile I think. Tiling the bathroom and scraping the popcorn ceiling have raided the old bank account! We feel like the lighting is priority right now, rather than a new picture; but your point is well taken.

Decoenthusiast, we will think about the window treatments in the near future. But that opens another can of worms as my husband would say. I'll put that design issue up soon. Thanks for your input.

Go silk on plants. Just make sure to scale not too small. You might want to remove picture it takes away from beautiful stone work.bigger items on mantel. All on one side.

Much better. If you want to go higher with the three-lantern arrangement, you can set the mid-sized one on a couple of stacked books.

Artificial Botanicals, I like to use Laurel leaves in a nice vase, they look really nice. But that is from Allstate Floral whatever, so use your judgement if the ones you find look to be needing.

I put this on my original post as well. We finished the mantel project. We looked at all your suggestions and our budget, along with our own personal preferences and this is what we came up with. We added lighting, changed decor on the mantel and added a plant on the hearth. The cornices are still boxy, the room is still green and the picture is still too small. But it is better and we like it!
