I would either roll or fold the down just as you say, personally I wouldn't cut them shorter....the roll/fold would stabilise them better, if you don't mind the look of doing them that way of course.

I use the brown fabric pots for orchids and roll the top hem down for the smaller plants. When they are blooming I display them in the terra cotta plastic pots that Home Depot sells.

The fabric pots survived the wind today so I am having more faith in them. Mine are 1/2 to 1gal

Elena, there are some here for $1.10, but the ones I located the other day don't come up in my search any more. They were .92 cents each, but apparently they chose to raise prices for Spring.

A bit lighter weight, but 94 cents each. Shipping is brutal, though. To me, shipping is about half as much as the order, so 40 pots is about $20 just in shipping. If I double the pots to 80, shipping doubles as well to $40.
