Zone 8 self containing, colorful, low light shrub

Hello, I have a small flower bed in front of my townhome. I'd like to plant 4 evergreen shrubs close up, then fill in front with an assortment of plants. Does anyone have a good suggestion for a shrub that doesn't grow too large (no larger than 4'), has some color, tolerates low light, no berries, and hardy. Thanks.

Please can you define 'small' and possibly show a picture of the space? Also an idea of the location, other then z8, the aspect and the soil type would be helpful .

Yes, where are you? California? Texas? Florida? Italy? England? Makes a huge difference. Do you mind fragrance? Deer a problem?
