Question on fig

I brought my Brown Turkey fig with me from up north and I'm sure it's loving this weather as much as I do. I didn't train it as a tree. I let it bush up. It looks great. But what time of year can I expect figs?

Is it in the ground or in a container? If in the ground, you might want to remove the figs this year and let it just get established.

Bea, my peters honey has figs on it now but now sure about the time for brown fig. Ask on the fig forum...they are the experts and a super group!

My LSU purple doesn't have any figs on it yet. It usually puts out 2 crops per year. A breba crop and a regular.

Bea, different fig trees get fruit depending on the variety, I don't have a Brown Turkey but I have 2 figs in containers and another in the ground. The one in the container is an early Italian variety and has figs that are getting mature, the other one in the container is a later French variety that has tiny figs now. The one in the ground is a native variety to this area and has not any figs yet but it will be any time now. Figs grow best as a bush according to my experience growing figs.

Thank all for your answers. This plant has a long, amazing story.

When I was growing up in Greece figs were growing everywhere & it was one of our common fruits along with loquats and I love them both. So about 8 years ago I bought a little tree that I planted in my yard back north - I really wanted "real" figs not those dried up things you get everywhere here in the States. Up north fig trees need winter protection & a lot of gardeners either bend the mature trees down & cover them with a thick straw layer & blankets or, for really young trees, by enclosing them in a really large straw blanket.

Well, life has a way of getting in the way of gardening sometimes & I was unable to give it winter protection. In the middle of the winter when life had settled down I remembered! I was heart broken. In the spring, after all the snow had melted I checked on it & of course there was nothing other than the main stock which had apparently fallen down during the winter. Grasses & wild plants grew all around it & I figured I'd lost it. Fast forward into about a month later & now it's spring. And I was out checking the wild plants growing in that part of the property and wow! Surprise, surprise! Not only the plant hadn't died but it had sprouted branches and leaves along the entire trunk that was laying on the ground! I was lucky - it had been a mild winter.

Since we were moving to another house for a few years before moving to Florida, I planted it in a 5 gallon container where it stayed until two years ago when we moved here & I brought it with me. I planted it in my yard thinking it would be happy there. It wasn't - not enough sun - it struggled but survived. So last winter I dug it up and transplanted it in a 20 gallon pot & look at it now. It's happy and so am I!!

    Now let's have some figs!

Bea, your fig tree looks very happy! I checked my figs this morning and they all have figs, looking like is going to be a nice harvest.

Carol, I can see you doing the opa and breaking dishes! lol

When I was living in NY, I used to frequent in Astoria Greek places where famous actors went like Kojak? it is been so long, I think one of the places was called Tsolias or something like that and it was run by a tough woman. People would drink ouzo, danced on the floor and break dishes, lol. A blast from the past!

Papa Jim, you are so funny! but you didn't know me,lol. At least at one time I was the high school queen and that was an only girls school, at the parties the boys waited in line to dance with me. When I was living in NY it was the disco era. Now when I look in the mirror I say "what the ***happened to me!" lol. But I always done gardening...

Great fig bush! I will cut mine back much further next year. My two trees are so tall & lanky. One branch just started budding some baby figs!
