Reviving a rescued willow

K. First off, I don't know where to post this so I hope this will do or I can be redirected.

I recently acquired a potted willow that was otherwise going to be thrown out. The best I can identify it is salix caprea (pendula, kilmarnock?). When I got it, the soil was pretty dry and compact. I took it out of the pot and the root (it seemed like more root than soil) held the shape of the pot, very little soil shook off. I put it in a slightly larger pot and added some soil. There were some obvious dead branches, dry through that I cut off. The tree still has leaves on it and appears viable. Is there anything else I can do to help it revive or promote filling out better? Novice gardener here. Also did I ID the species correctly? Thanks for any help.
