Tile backsplash is probably considered more hip and modern, but it also ups the expense and for me, I felt it would be too busy, so we went with the 4 inch backsplash and I am happy with it. In a kitchen, I'd probably tile. I do think you need a backsplash of some kind.

As a floor and counter top covering shop- any granite slab with a 4 inch splash is better then P-Lam! Doing a tile back splash would not be that expensive, especially if you kept with a reasonable priced mosaic. But, we have tons of homeowners and new construction contractors that use 4 inch splashes all the time. As of now, and years down the road I do not believe it will make your home look dated at all.

susanalanandwrigley and Wholesale Flooring services are on the right track. You do need a backsplash. And in a bathroom, we tend to do the 4” matching splash often without fear of dating the space. This is one of those timeless “safe” choices. Only fear dating a space when you are edging on the “trendy” side. While trends tend to fade, the standard 4” backsplash has been around since the beginning.

It also depends on the style you’ve chosen for your space. If you have tile wainscoting, you can utilize this as your backsplash. Just be sure to bring the height of your wainscot at least 4” above the vanity throughout the space and you’re good to go. Otherwise, if you’ve chosen an accent tile within the space, bringing the same material over to your vanity area helps to complete the look you are going for.
