Thanks. In fact erosion was my biggest concern. Now the rest of the landscape does not have a "character" yer. its a new sub-division with approx 1/3 acre lot. The whole sub-division is sort of on a hill. beyond the slope there is a retention pond and the rain water from the homes up above tend to flow through the yard. Hence erosion was my concern. Since it is a clean slate, I am quite open to suggestions. If you have any please do share. A link or photo would speak volumes.

Since it's clean slate and the rest of the yard is likely sparse, this is a good opportunity to do something showy. The benefit of a sloped garden, is that you get to see more of the plants. What is the style of your house and what kind of plants are already there (in the rest of the yard)? This should help paint a picture of what's existing for a more cohesive look.

I have a sloped yard and at is steep. Had erosion issues in the past as well.. So I sodded which solved the issue. But I regret sodding grass. So much of work mowing, keeping weeds out etc. If i had to do it again, I will NOT put grass.
I am now venturing i to vegetable garden.

As others have mentioned, you need to take into consideration what you want to do with the area. If you want a veggie garden, try terracing it, with the terraces running perpendicular to the slope. If you want to use it for recreation, consider sod or at least grass seed. If you just want to not think about it anymore because you don't want to use it, do want to stop the erosion, and don't want the neighbors to see something ugly--use the blue rugs or some ground cover that will hold the soil. My personal choice would be blue rug.

My favorites are the mixed grasses and perennials. With the two it's fairly simple to combine a lot of plants that flower at different times to keep some seasonal interest. It would make for a very big ongoing show with low maintenance.

IMHO, Blue rug will cover the yard, but you can't walk on it or use the yard for other purposes.

Do not use rail road ties! They are full of creosote and are AWFUL to work with.
