Bathroom cabinets/vanities help

Can anyone give me the pros and cons of buying a pre made bathroom cabinet or should I have a cabinet maker come out and build me one? I just wonder about quality and it lasting if I buy one from a big box store. If you wants please share pics of yours. Thanks!

Depending on your bathroom, there's no reason why a semi custom cabinet can't work. GF is working on her bathroom now and we are going to a local lumber yard whose pricing is as good or better than a big box and she's getting a very nice cabinet. It's going into a corner on one side, open on the other so there's no special fit required.

I'd go custom if I were doing cabinetry wall to wall and wanted special features such as particular location of the sinks, surrounds, or I had a very tight fit and wanted to squeeze useful space out of every inch.

If you do have a tight fit, the big box stores won't come out and measure so you're responsible if the cabinet doesn't fit...the local guys send someone out to measure.

I redid my powder room last year. I went to a local lumber yard and got a lovely freestanding furniture style vanity. With a standard size vanity, options for standard size sinktops are available. This can be a one piece china top with integrated sink, or an off the rack granite or quartz with undermount white china sink. Depending on the actual cabinet you purchase the quality will vary. Mine is made by Versiniti a smaller local (NH) company and I am very happy with it.

5+ years ago I purchased a vanity and a granite sink top with undermount white china sink from Lowe's for my children's bath. The cabinet has worn OK, I dont think it is the best quality. It doesnt feel really solid, the drawers and doors are a bit finicky. I am always adjusting to get them to align. Where in other rooms/other cabinetry I never adjust the hinges. Also, there is some separation in the joints, but there is a lot of humidity in a bathroom and I am sure my kids are not stellar at turning on the fan(get auto turn on!). I have never been happy with the granite. It shows 'wet' 'dark' spots. That could be the nature of the stone, or the sealing. I have resealed several times but problem persists. I see myself replacing both within the next couple of years. I do think I made a bad purchase.

I am currently redoing my masterbath, and I am using Schrock Cabinets, purchased from local lumber company, kitchen/bath center. They seem very well made and I am happy with the purchase.

I want to underscore that sticking with standard vanity size will save you money on a vanity top. So if a standard size works, that is a plus. A standard size can be off the rack, from a kitchen/bath center, or custom- its just about the dimensions. My master bath is not a custom size, because of the need for a filler strip on one end and the fact it is very big. I am not having an easy time finding a countertop in the price point I wanted. I did recently find a remnant that will work and am awaiting pricing.

We redid our guest bath five years ago and installed an out-of-the-box vanity and prefabbed marble top with the sink already attached. They came from Lowe's. They still look great!

13 yrs ago, I purchased Kraftmaid/Schrock cabinets from Lowe's for my kitchen. They still look and perform beautifully today. Kraftmaid also makes bathroom vanities that are wonderfully made and will last for many yrs.
