Porcelain Wood Tile Grout Color. Light or Dark?

We are building a home and have decided on porcelain wood tile for our entire first floor - Daltile Saddle Brook, color Walnut Creek. The grout options the builder has provided through Customs don't truly match the variation of colors on the tile and I'm left with either Saddle Brown #59 or Charcoal #60 to choose from - with a 3/16" grout line. I would like the grout to fully blend in to give more of that hardwood-look, however, due to the color options I'm left with, there will be contrast. I'm leaning towards the black as it looks rustic and mimics hardwood more than the lighter one but concerned that the 3/16" grout line will be too thick. The grout samples below are 1/4".

Thoughts?

Colleen which tile did you use? the walnut creek or farmhouse?

What is the brand/name of tile/color of farmhouse tile? It’s beautiful!

    where was it purchased?

It is Daltile Saddle Brook color is Farmhouse. Grout is Custom Epoxy Truffle color. My contractor bought. I think directly from Daltile. You can search online and I think even Wayfair is selling. Absolutely love. It is so durable and easy to clean.

I am going to install saddle brook Walnut Creek. ItIcheergrly which grout color did you choose? I am up in the air on which color to choose. Advice?

Hi, since the tile is on the the dark side you would want a dark color grout. The darker the better. We had it installed with the smallest grout line as well. Grout is the finishing touch. Don’t rush this step, make sure it’s the right color for you and what look you are going for. Even buy a couple of different colors of grout, mix a little bit up and let it dry over night, it will be worth it. As you can notice you can slightly see the grout lines, I could of went even darker. I preferred not to see the lines and wanted a more realistic wood look. Let me know if you need more pics. Sorry for the delayed response. Hope this helps!

Tile also appears much lighter in these pictures than in person.

Which grout color and brand did you decide on with the Walnut Creek? Your floors look wonderful!

Dambola64 what grout color did you get? Do you like your tile? Can you need the dirt easily since it's a dark color?

Help! We put brown Daltile and the man at Home Depot said tabacco brown grout. It’s too light! It’s killing me! My husband feels it’s too late and it is what it is! Ugh! Why didn’t I find this site before!!!

That happened to us! I think it was over mixed. It's been over a year and we're finally going to have someone come stain the grout. We are going with Renew grout colorant in "sable brown" . Going to order one bottle to test and make sure it's dark enough, as we ordered a bottle of the tobacco brown and it was pretty much the same color!!

We had our grout stained to tobacco brown. It was originally not grouted well (the grout was 3 different colors!!)

Our grout turn out too light, so I tried to use different products to fix problem with mixed results. Last one was the best, http://www.groutrejuvenator.com/product/rejuvenator-grout-stain-quart-grout-colorant/ not only it stain grout perfectly, it seals it too so your grout will never get dirty. The downside it is a lot of work for large area (took me almost 20 hours total for 2,000 sf)

Sofikbr, did you get saddlebrook walnut creek? If so how do you like it?

I got quartz that was way too light, so I just tinted it with my acrylic base artist paint (just few drops for cup) . But they product excellent and I use much less then what they suggest (probability 10% from gallon)

Here are a few more final pictures of our basement after trim and furniture is in. We used Saddle Brook Farmhouse. The grout was Custom's "Epoxy". The "Epoxy" version of the grout is significantly more expensive, but it seems to be more durable. The color is Truffle.

Becky zaccardi I am looking at tobacco brown. Do you have pictures?

Here is a photo of our saddlebrook farmhouse tiles with tobacco brown grout

We also went with the tobacco brown with the Saddlebrook Farmhouse. The grout has lightened up but we are happy with it. This tile is great, we even used it on top of the built in bench in my kids black and white bathroom.

Daltile Brown with sable grout ;)

Our grout ended up being 1/8” tobacco brown.

Becky, how did your contractor stain the grout? I have bought the stain and now need to not mess up the floor anymore than it is;)

I think they meticulously painted it on!

@ndumrauf and @lilreyna428 what color grout did you each choose? We’re having it installed and can’t decide between black and truffle! I bought both colors, mixed it myself and put it on our tile sample...we are leaning towards truffle but afraid it will lighten in a few months. Would you post photos if you have them??

Just wanted to say to all of you thank you for posting your pics of light and dark grouts. I thought I was the only one obsessing over this stuff, but I know if I pick the wrong one I will think of it everytime I go to the bathroom! (master bath remodel).

Having the same issue guys. Was thinking of doing dark mocha. Problem is that my tiles are quite light but have a few dark wood grains. What do you think?

I’d match the grout to the darkest part of your tiles. Mocha looks great above.

I did Daltile farmhouse in saddlebrook. I LOVE my tile. We get comments on it all the time and it hides the dog hair and dirt well.
I, too, had major grout issues. We chose Bostik Latte and it was terrible. They mixed it wrong or it was our hard water, whatever. Regardless of the cause, it looked chalky, completely uneven and much lighter than we wanted. We ended up having them use a grout sealant and colorant in the latte from Bostik. I feel it blends great so the floor looks more seamless. (Same floor in photos, just different lighting)

Queen of Princesses- Which pic looks most like the Farmhouse color? I just returned from the Daltile store, and they didn't have any of the Saddlebrook colors to view :( I love some of the Farmhouse pictures I see, but others look too grey......

Julia, here are some more pics. I don’t see any grey in my tiles at all.
Julia, I realize now that I’m picking wood stains for my table, that the floor does have grey in it. The darker patches have a slight grey hint but I only see it if I put something grey/brown next to it. My counters are grey. Here they are together. Hope that helps

https://www.houzz.com/user/a1717ie827 how does the tile work for you two years later? What grout worked out in the end?

Ours is awesome and looks brand new 2+ years later!!

Becky, thanks for writing in. But I think your tile is a different tile. I’m trying to respond to a person on here ( a1717e827 (no name) who used the Selva Tobacco Wood look tile. They took a pic of their tile and put in a comment in 2017 . But I don’t see a way to directly respond to a their comment. But that person installed same tile we are about to install. Yours did look very nice. I’m glad it’s working out for you. take care.

The thinnest grout line possible gets you the overall wood floor look. Thick grout lines are a dead giveaway to it being tile.

Queen OfPrincesses, I notice your floor has a "sheen" to it, I haven't found a wood tile that looks that shiny, how did you get it to "glow". We are in the process of getting our whole house done in Daltile "Willow Bend" in dark brown and are using a Sable Brown grout. We almost had a heart attack when we saw it slopped on the tile at first, looked almost red, but once they cleaned it up it's looking lovely. Very excited, just wish the tiles had more of a shine to them. The tile installer said he used lemon oil on his mom's floor and buffed it out, he just made sure not to get it on the grout. Beautiful floors btw :)

Melissa J, hmmmm not sure. Think it’s just the way the light in my house comes through. I wouldn’t say my tiles are shiny in person. They are textured and not slippery when walking. I clean them with water and distilled white vinegar. ♀️

Hey a back splash that has the same color tones as your counterTop. It could be a single color or a mixture of those colors. Can’t go wrong that way

wanted to hop in here and ask if you're still happy with your saddle brook tiles? I am considering using it for my entire floor. It's a lot of space to cover so I wanted to make sure I'm making the right decision.
