Do you have a deliberate mix of styles going on with modern and more traditional elements? I'm not terribly crazy about this chair and table combo regardless as the table looks a bit out of place in the room.

Your present wood chairs are really nice and your room is so interesting and unique. The white chairs are seen everywhere and I think they are too casual.

Between the two styles, the wood. Just unfortunate they're not comfortable.

It's not often the Tulip chair gets used with the matching table because it's often too many white pedestal bases on the floor. Additionally, the seat on the chair is fairly small and not comfortable for most people.

Yes, Beverly, I know you don't see the chairs with the table too often which is why I didn't buy them to begin with. I got too many 'matchy-matchy' comments when I was thinking about them initially. Yet, I'm still coming back to them. We actually find them very comfortable.

Keep your dining chairs for now, don't get the tulip chairs.

Love the photos you posted Outshopping and I have used similar wallpapers in other houses but not in this one. I'm looking forward to getting my artwork hung in the dining room so that it it will look more finished. And I still have window treatments to install. It's a process......

These wood chairs are great. They break up the "white" of the room and compliment the other traditional elements nicely. Plus I think the tulip chairs and table together would be overkill and kind of chaotic when combined with such eclectic decor. Go with the wood!

i love mixing styles but i feel like these chairs don't work somehow. Perhaps they are too powerful and work against the beautifully simple saarinen tulip table. I'm also not a fan of the upholstery on the chairs, it feels too old or fussy. i wouldn't do the tulip chairs because it's expected. Another wooden chair would be lovely. like these

I love the chairs and the upholstery! Your chandelier is gorgeous!

My first reaction was OMG "those chairs are gorgeous", immediately followed by the thought "yes it does look confused".
I think the issue may be too many competing beautiful items. When I find that happening, my reaction is to push the envelope further!
Your rug, the upholstery, the chair silhouette, table & chandelier all want attention, so the balance occurs when you keep going! The room now calls for equally well thought out window panel fabrics and art!

Keep in mind, it takes guts to push the envelope, but I think your instincts are what you need to listen to - TRUST that YOU know what works for you.
You are one the right track. Don't question your gut - others' opinions may help you crystallize your direction... Just be sure it is pleasing to YOU!

Thank you, all. Very helpful/thoughtful comments. I think I will keep the chairs for now. At least, until I finish the room. I can always replace them later if we find that we just aren't happy with them. You all have helped me think this through and I really appreciate it.

I'm not a pro by any sense of the word but I find all of the different elements too confusing. I feel like the table goes well with the upholstery (modern) and the chair frames go well with the rug (traditional) but altogether is a bit much. I do like that you pulled a color from the rug to incorporate into the chairs -- it does work in a strange way. I think what I'm mostly having trouble with is the table actually. The table is so blatantly modern whereas your other pieces are a bit of both. I can't make any suggestions, just wanted to share. :)

Keep the chairs, once the room is finished it will all make more sense. I do have a problem with the tulips. They definitely do not go with the room.

She's a Coton, Lisa, but frequently is id'd as a Maltese. But at @ 12 lbs, I think she's bigger than most female Maltese.

I like the chairs, the upholstery, the chandy (although not my personal taste) and the table. Your rug though I don't love with this combination. Is that something you would be willing to trade out?

I don't care for tulip chairs myself and also think the wood chairs look better with the table. One thing I don't like about the table is the pedestal base.

I'd see if there were a way to take the stain from the wood chairs and have the stem and base of the table done. Your table top would appear to float, but the white would still work with the room colour. I think that would be awesome.

The chairs look great with the table...what is "off putting" is the wood tone is nowhere else in the room that I can see. If you add a sideboard or some other piece of furniture in that wood tone, it would change everything. Personally, I love the wood chairs, but I would have them painted the color of the white shade of the table. The juxtaposition of the Biedermeier shape and the white would be stunning.

Based on the formal ceiling and chandelier and rugs, I wouldn't do white chairs. You have enough white going on, and the details of the ceiling and light are lovely. Painting the chairs white would lose formality in there.

What I think would be great is to have the art pieces that you have hanging above your couch added to the dining room! Don't hang the two pieces on the floor by the fan room.

The couch art pieces are great because of their colours, modern elements and no frames. The frames on the art that you are considering hanging would be neat on the bare modern art you have on the floor. That would be fun to see!

I like the mix very much, especially if the Saar. tabletop is marble ... ?

Barbara, you can't tell very well from this photo but I do have the same wood in the adjacent LR that is open to the DR via a wide doorway. I like your idea of painting the chairs white although I'm not sure how the fabric would look. And I love the fabric.

I like what you have started. I would put an Ikebana piece on the table.

You have a skill with selecting and mixing and do it well; so trust your first instinct with the wood chairs. I noticed your herringbone floor and I think the wood helps to tie in the wooden chairs. Creating the unexpected is interesting and so much more personal.

They aren't as comfortable as some DR chairs I've owned but they are definitely acceptable. We've had two dinners so far that lasted several hours each and no complaints. Even if people were just being polite (not something I usually have to worry about with our friends!) I don't think they would have lingered so long.

Love, love, love the wood chairs! You have a true eye for decorating and design. A bit different and unexpected is the hallmark of a well-designed room!

Keep the chairs they are so much more unique and beautiful they look wonderful in your dining room.
