Painting the door the same color as the wall will help to take the focus off it.

I can't tell what's going on in this room at all, what with the unmade bed and stuff on the floor. I have no idea what you're going for design wise at all. A 3 foot French door will not cost that much and way less expensive than many if the options here. Sliding barn doors are a fad that will go out very quickly and they are stupidly expensive.

You just can't hide the door, so work with it. Personally I wouldn't paint the door in the same color as the walls. It would look too massive. Paint it a beautiful matching contrast color and match your accessories (bedding, throws, pillows…). If the hot tub deck is inside and if it looks great and luxury, you might consider no door at all, that way you get a glimpse of the luxury spa you have. If you could afford, you could consider a frosted/milky glass door. With a frosted/milky glass door everybody can see that there is a spa behind it. Good luck. Please share your 'after' photos.

Paint the door and molding trim the same color as the wall paint.

Ditch the jambs, door and door trim and install a flush mount door that is made of MDF smooth using a Rocyork invisible hinge system over a disappearing Ezy Jamb system. And then paint the same as wall color, including new handle. Completely disappears!

Well, ahem, you could use SOSS Door Hardware to hide the hinges, and then paint the door to match the walls.

Since it is in a bedroom, why not hang a beautiful mirror on it ?

Try cladding the door with plain fibreboard in order to get rid of the panelling detail. Remove the existing architrave, exposing the door jamb which should be almost flush with the wall. It may need some filling etc. Replace the hardware with recessed flush handles and finally paint everything- the wall, door & frame the same colour with a really matt finish.

Why not paint all the doors and molding in the room matte black...along with matte black on the window trim. Then paint the walls white or other colour of your choice, but I would go with white as the room looks very dark. I would hang something fabulous on the door, like a great bunch of dried herbs, flowers or whatever..and make a feature of it....perhaps something 'bath' oriented as the door leads into the hot tub area. You could also add some black framed artwork to the right of the door if you wanted to fill in that space. I wouldn't spend the money replacing the door taking off the molding....Black accents in any room can pull it together....Try black lampshades on the bedside tables for example.

1. You could add something of architectural interest above the door. But you need significant sized artwork to the right to balance the wall.
2. As others said paint the door jam and the door all the same color as the walls. Remember though, if the walls are flat paint use flat paint on the door and jam, whatever, use the same. So your eye is not drawn to a white spot. Please do not paint that wall black. It is not an accent wall. Then you still need some cool artwork on that right wall. Even something as thoughtless as Eiffel Tower photo's.

By the way, without good housekeeping, no matter how well the design, it will NEVER look good. Make that bed!

My feeling is, if the bed is made, the house always feels clean. And who does not love getting into a made bed at night. Ahhhh..

Cover the entire wall with fabric pannels hung by one long dowel across the top hidden by some crown molding. If you mount said rod/molding combo about 6-12 inches from the ceiling you could hide rope light in the top of it and create a cool soft glow.

How about a room divider to use infront of the door to not only cover it up, but also make it look like a decoration...I would do that. Here's some options from target and pier 1, but you can find them lots of places...world market, ikea, even Walmart, probably Cosco...hope this helps! Best wishes!

I would secure black & white pictures in frames that would cover the present door inlays so that it would look flat in the background and ground your photos. You can use bright green frames like your plant color if you want a pop of color. You could also add randomly placed decorative glass door knobs and hang necklaces on them as an accent as long as they wouldn't get in the way of opening the door. Just would have to work with it...

This is a picture of my hall doors to the AC and water heater. It was kinda right in your face when you walked into the house. I painted the frame to look like a picture frame, painted the doors to look like picture mat and then hung a large painting and it looks like a large framed picture now. People had to really look at the doors twice to see that there was actually double doors behind the picture.

Build a shallow bookcase and attach it to the door. When you open the door, the book case will be on the back.

I have an outside door too that is in the bedroom. Paint it the same color as the wall color including the molding. This will help it blend into wall. The white is creating an accent of the door since the wall is darker.

You can get a stained or leaded glass insert that will fit into your existing door. It would be much cheaper than replacing the door.

Maybe accent the door with a mural. It leads to the outside.

In my townhouse, the interior door to my garage is in my living room. I hate it but...It is what it is. At the very least, I need the garage it opens into to look a lot better. (Hellooo Husb, who works on his Cobra!) I think our builder 'practiced' on our house...he got all the other floor plans right!

In my opinion, the door is fine the way it is. Put a dresser to the right of the door with a mirror above the dresser. The door stands out because there is nothing else on or in front of the wall.

I think the door would fade out of prominence if you decorate the wall next to it with anything from a single large colorful contemporary piece or a grouping of family photos in WHITE or colorful frames. Focus putting something special on the wall and you won't see the door anymore.

i would paint the door and trim the color of the walls AND put some artwork or mirror on the wall next to it. if it really continues to bug you , hang a closed drape ( fabric and rod matched to your windows) over it and pretend there is a window under there.

I agree with easwinney: hang a quilt over it, so you can forget about it.

there are a number of ways to hide a door, feature a door, or something in between. if you post more photos of the rest of the room, it would help to give comprehensive advice to know what is happening with the rest of the space. the before and after below is one of many ways it could be done.

I can't help but laugh :D ugly door? it's a standard 6 panel colonial indoor door that has been around for longer than all of us have lived.

DYI had some need ideas to hide doors. One of them was a bookshelf unit attached to the door, a cool DIY project and add some more on either side. I've been wanting to find a door to do this too since I saw it, almost like a hidden room behind the door

It is an exterior door. Books on other side will get wet.

Clad the whole wall with reclaimed wood as well as the door make it invisible. You could put a light wash on the wood to keep the feeling light and bright . If you do it right it will still look modern. Put a pendent light in the corner that is modern and textural, But I like the hanging plant thing in the corner just freshen it up . If you use the door for the hot tub you could even put some modern hooks next to the door for robe or towels. I look for free wood on line all the time. It's amazing what people get rid of on craigslist.

If you can, I would go with French doors.

Regarding to your budget, we would not recommend Door replacements, but changing color is the best recommendation. The Question is what color ! We would suggest Black, simply it can turn old doors or even ugly doors into something to look at. spending small amount of money can create the big change;

I would add some chair rail 3/4 of the way up and paint the trim and door one or two tones lighter then the wall color. This would elongate the eye and not see the tiny door in a big wall, it would make the door the focal point.

But @acm, the problem itself doesn't date, really. Builders still do weird things in 2020 and people are still trying to deal with them by searching Houzz with terms like "ugly door, camouflage".

It may be "done" for the person who posed the question here a decade ago, but others who have the same problem will always be grateful to find solutions here.
