A formal entry ( any entry!!) isn't supposed to "store shoes" . Remove them to the bedroom of the owner of the shoes, or near closet. A temporary basket is fine, but it isn't supposed to hold an entire household shoe inventory. At some point.......nothing holds all of the shoes, no matter what you shall provide. I know not when this trend began......hate it.

I think it goes with taking shoes off at the door? It is extra work to carry shoes around to have the right ones at the door with you so people don't want to do it.

We have just the one entry so for now we have a shoe bench from Ikea parts with big baskets as drawers to hold shoes. Everyone gets a basket, if you run out of room prune your shoe collection and take extras to your room. This way people can have a reasonable shoe choice by the door (everyday nice, running shoes, seasonal shoe) and you only have to make a point of getting something different on special occasions.

The shoe bench also provides nice definition of space for us, so at some point to spruce it up I will probably get a cabinet person to make us a similar piece but in nice wood with drawers instead of baskets. However having a shoe bench is always going to make the space less formal even if it is a pretty shoe bench.
