I would remove all the soffits and contact a local cabinet shop to remake only the upper cabinets in a taller height to the top of your pantry wall. I would also change the door and drawer fronts to a Shaker style door with European style soft-close hinges. Look at the option of upgrading appliances to Stainless and getting a contrasting floor.

Sorry it sent too fast. I would keep cabinets white and add knobs and/or pulls.

If you are keeping the counters, appliances and floor I would keep the cabinets white. Definitely remove the soffit and get new hardware. Depending on your budget, you could get new doors, replace just the upper cabinets, or do another row of cabinets above your uppers.

I would consider replacing the floor for the most impact. I think the white cabinets are timeless, and would thus leave them. Also, a backsplash can be an easy improvement. Good luck!

One more idea, quick and cheap - add some architectural detail to the front of the island/sink area (such as board & batten, and some corbels). Will be big bang for your buck!

Don't paint the cabinets. Why is everyone so preoccupied with grey?!?!?!?

On a budget? - I'd put on modern cabinet & drawer pulls & paint walls to go with countertop. Lighter grout in floor. When you get the money - 1. take down soffits. 2. Change out overhead florescent light. 3. Granite.

I agree, definitely change the yellow wall color. Lighter grout will help too. A nice bright floor mat will help bring in some color.
It is expensive to replace all appliances at once. Even though it might not look ideal for a while, try to replace one piece at a time. We found an excellent stainless steel fridge on Craig's List for 60% cheaper than Home Depot; a deep cleaning with bleach etc and it was like new. Stainless steel microwaves aren't too much $$.

I don't think the soffits are bad. Take down the clutter (plants) and they provide an interesting geometric element. I think first and foremost, the worst offender is your wall color, which is very dated - year 2000 builders color... Next, I'd replace appliances, which are also pretty dated. For me, the next change would be to replace that slatted pantry door. I'd keep the cabinets white, definitely. The arched panel fronts are dated, but white is classic enough it won't be a big deal. Add some hardware. I also agree that dressing up the peninsula / sink area with board and batten would be very nice and easy/cheap. If you're planning on spending more than that I would probably spring for replacing the floors.
