Marsha, the most common suggestion for the successful control of aphids on a manageable number of plants is sprays of plain water and squishing with your fingers.

Outside in the gardens, I use a strong spray from the hose to do the job....not so strong that plants are damaged.

But I wonder about the ID....aphids are not found on the soil but are strict plant feeders.

i thought about that too, not sure if i can get a photo, they are so small and get smashed as soon as i touch them and i don't have a macro lens either...they do fly when i disturb them by waving or shaking the container, so i ruled out spider mites, etc that don't fly and most solutions suggested online seem to kill off all of them, anyway. i have been seeing more lately and have been transplanting with potting soil (maybe there's a lot of nutrients in it). i am also concerned because i grow and feed my cat pet grass, so that has to be free of things like soap; maybe i can rinse the grass off before giving to her.

They're not aphids.

Yes, a photo will be necessary for us to identify these critters. No one can really make any suggestions unless we know what you're dealing with.

Aphids will develop a flying stage when population levels are high, but maybe these are whitefly? They are particularly likely to fly when disturbed, and can be a problem in greenhouse/indoor conditions.
