Hmmm, they look more like a futura size. If so, they should grow a little taller. Nice plants, Nancy.

The top one looks like it could be Futura Simplex, except the yellow margins are so wide and drifting! I love that stripe on its own on the left. Could you post more photos of this one?

the bottom one looks like regular Hahnii, but maybe stacking clone? Not sure. My friend has one like this and it's robust and beautiful. Gorgeous plants!

Oh! I didn't see that thin yellow line at first! Very nice! Not jade Marginated though. I have one and it is solid green, no discernible transverse striping like yours. Mine has wider yellow margins as well.

Very nice plants. I just looked at Hirt's online and his Etsy shop. I didn't see either of these. What's the secret? I'm kinda in love with the 2nd plant.

I've bought 3 sans from Hirt's via Amazon and they are all very nice. Highly recommend them.

Barbmock, I thought they seemed odd because the leaves are all around the same height. I thought futura had random height leaves.

Vitorama, it isn't a stacking clone. That would be a plant that had layers of leaves growing upward.

Katrina, if you're talking about the second tiny picture, that is what I ordered but received the plant underneath it, not the same plant. They are probably out of it.

The Jade hahnii is a solid green, no cross banding. I have a couple of them. Home Depot gets them with their mixed flats of succulents (quart and 5" pots), check there from time to time. You would miss them if you only check the houseplant section.

NextO, I love the last pic. The one under the tiny Jade Hahnii. The thin yellow band is very pretty, and the way it grows looks like praying hands to me. I have 1 Hahnii Jade and I've been looking for another. I found that one at a WM. I check my BBS about twice a week in the houseplants section and the succulents. Nothing else yet.

akrrm, I forgot to comment on the Hirt's 'Dwarf Laurentii' you mentioned. It is actually Hahnii Marginated.

Since your plants are only 7 inches tall, if they or offsets do NOT grow any taller and I'm wrong about eventually being Futura-size, then your 1st pic is Hahnii Marginated and your narrow-margined sans is Hahnii Gilt-Edge.

Gilt-Edge is equally as rare on the market as the original Futura, so you still scored!

But I don't think Barb and I are wrong, in spite of the shorter height your plants look too robust to be Hahii-types.

Russ, in my BBS, I'm seeing robusta, moonshine, black gold (compacta), which just showed up last weekend, whitney, eve, laurentii, and regular tall trifasciata. And futura simplex galore. I found 1 jade a couple months ago and haven't seen any since. The regular hahnii are in some grocery stores. My local nurseries aren't much better. I found that tall Black Coral (Black gold) and thats it. The futhest I've hunted is about an hour away and the only different plants I found were cylindrica and a superba(?). Looks just like the tall laurenti, but is shorter with much wider leaves. Surprisingly it's slim pickings in my area.

Katrina, I think the sans in your area are what most folks find except obviously in NextO's area. I think that's southern Calif.

Today I was in an Ace Hardware 70 miles away that has a small nursery on the side, they had some really nice, big cylindrica's for $10. One was quite a bit more chunky and robust than usual but I didn't buy it. Not many different sans here either in the big box stores, mostly what you see.

You mentioned Futura Superba being everywhere, the Superba you saw an hour away and describe as 'like the tall laurenti but shorter with much wider leaves' would be Futura Superba.

The Futura Simplex is everywhere. I only found that 1 Futura Superba. I thought I was the Lone Ranger in having few plant offerings. Thanks for clearing that up. I do find it fun visiting different nurseries though. I've bought some plants that I'd have never seen otherwise, so I've never made a trip and come back with nothing.

My first question is aren't hahnii also referred to as birdsnest? There were stock photos on the hirt's website so I guess that's why I thought I was getting hahnii. The reason I thought they sent the dwarf laurentii because they only offered those three, black gold birdsnest, green jade birdsnest and dwarf laurentii. The only other small sansevieria on their website with odd names were creme and green (golden hahnii), gold something else (also golden hahnii but a different picture) and hahnii silver marginated which was called starlight.

I am happy with my plants. I think are are beautiful although not what I thought I was getting. I have heard of gilt edge, my mom gave me a sans I thought had a gilt edge.

The leaves are so strange almost like two different plants growing from one, taller thinner leaves and shorter wide leaves. I also grew a new plant from a piece of rhizome so I'm anxious to see how tall it gets.

Thank you for taking the time to explain the differences. The sans names can be so confusing, especially when growers change the names.

I used to get sans from a lady in Florida named, Karole, she was on ebay and had such a big selection of sansevieria, I think she's out of business now. I'm trying to find sans I used to have that perished.

Hey Nancy! I know you said you're happy with your sans, but I don't want you to give up on a Hahnii ID yet. If your sans don't grow too much taller than they are right now, you do have Jade Dwarf Marginated and Hahnii Gilt-Edge. Considering it's very hard to ID sans from pictures, there's a good chance I'm dead wrong and your plants are in fact the dwarf type.

Yes, the dwarf varieties are called 'Bird Nest' types, and Hirt's calling them that adds to the chances your order was correct.

All the sizes of trifasciata varieties have Gilt-Edge examples. I have trifasciata Gilt-Edge, there is a Hahnii Gilt-Edge, and the in-between size would actually be the old Futura. It has very narrow yellow margins, in effect, a Gilt-Edge. Chahinian has said that every type of variegation will eventually show up in every size of trifasciata variety... tall (full size), intermediate (Futura's) and short (Hahnii's)

I didn't know Karole but knew of her, she was very popular and I have many sans friends around the country that ordered from her. It's too bad she's no longer on the sans scene, there are so few sans sources that I hate to lose any.

Anyway, keep us posted on progress on your new sans. Hopefully they won't grow too much more and you'll have gotten what you ordered.
