be wary of staggered depth cabinets, it can end up that ones 'inset' from their neighbors have trouble with the doors opening as wide as you'd like.

Also consider your moldings when staggering height or depth.......a small stagger + 5" cabinet crown molding = very challenging

Design wise, as stated, staggered cabinets are out. Going to a deeper wall cabinet may hinder your counter usage as well. But, you may have extra deep plates that require a deeper cabinet interior. Clean straight lines are the way to go but, the kitchen must be functional too so use the depth increase only when needed.

I can see using deeper cabinets in a particular section of your kitchen -- say, a piece of cabinetry next the fridge that doesn't connect to anything else. But otherwise, the depth would keep you from using your counter space comfortably. Maybe if you have a microwave you want to build in, or space for a medium-depth pantry, but most of the time that foot is a good depth.

You can do anything with custom cabinets, but generally speaking, most standard wall cabinets are 12" deep. So it will depend on your budget. You don't say what style you're going for. If more traditional, staggered depths can work well. If more modern, I'd try to keep the depth the same throughout, if possible.
