Hardwood

Hardwood is a much better option for a kitchen. Some laminates bubble up when water or other liquids are left on them. When considering hardwood, there are two routes you can take.

1. Pre-finished - This is usually more affordable, quicker to install and there are plenty of options! However, because they are pre-finished, it makes it harder to refinish in the future because the finish used is unknown. Some products react with each other and cause a sticky mess. Also, the pieces are not sealed after being installed, so think of the particles and liquids that make their way into the cracks.

2. The old-fashioned way - This involves installing the wood then sanding, staining and sealing. This allows you to choose any wood, size and color. It is a lengthier process but is by far, the best option as they can be refinished down the road. Also, being they are sealed in place, you don't have to worry about things seeping into the cracks as much. (It will happen overtime in some spots as wood naturally moves, especially here in Minnesota!)
