Caroline, it is truly a little secret sunken garden - appx. 4' X 5' maybe? Hedge and walls total probably 6' high. I don't remember if the gargoyle has a name but I did research the Latin word for "lurking". So I call him "Insidio" for short.

The statue on the right is a lion, to the left just a flat rock to sit a tea cup on. There is a very small carved stone that holds rain water to the left of that. I bet you missed this tiny guy:

Are they "dry stacked?" How on Earth did you make them? :) That is one of the most beautiful garden features I've ever seen!

Thanks again. Yes, both the faux sandstone block wall and the two side natural rock walls are dry stacked. Once you've laid a good foundation of gravel and sand, it's just a matter of putting the pieces together - like a puzzle. And plenty of grunting and sweating, and a cuss word now and then.

I should have put another lion at the other end of the bench in place of the flat rock (it's not round, just an optical illusion in the photo), but at the time I was thinking more of a place to sit and reflect with a cup of something. The end of it sure does look like a face tho doesn't it?

Also had the idea when I first built the back wall to place something ontop of it, similar to what you see making up the decoration on the back of the bench. Not all the way across the top of the wall, just in the middle; but then decided it might make the whole thing too busy. I like the way the spirea branches eventually will drip down over it.

Today I saw a sculpted head in a garden. It looks very much like how I see the flat rock on the bench in your photo.
