How about something made of lace that would obscure everything from outside unless you shove your face against the glass thus warning those inside you're trying to peep? Lace would let you look out and see who's at the door. My aunt used a lace privacy curtain on her front door window until she changed it for stained glass.

I think in general the outside world is a lot less interested in peering into our homes than we seem to think. Lace or some other sheer is your best bet, until you get to know your neighborhood and worry less. Maybe a motion-activated porch light.
