Need help with fireplace surround!

Our contractor will be starting the fireplace surround soon and I'm looking for help on the following:

Style of surround.

Paint color for surround, woodwork and doors.

Paint color for walls.

Paint color for coffee and end table.

Any other suggestions you may have for the family room.

The furniture, rug and drapes are staying for now. The beams will stay stained. The first picture is the style I was thinking for the surround. Thanks for all your help.

Groveraxle, I wish the green pillows were an exact match to the green in the rug. I keep wanting to go back to more of a red/burgundy which I know you don't like. Should the third pillow be the same size?

The linen drapes have a 5" hem so yes I can take them down easily.

Thanks for the visual with the clock, it looks better raised a bit.

Now to figure out if I need new lamps and paint or stain for the tables.

Thanks again for all of your suggestions, I really appreciate your help!!

Kathy, I too love the dog on the sofa!! Thanks for the suggestion of Bleeker Beige and painting just the baseboards and trim, I really do like the look. I'm almost done with the trim in the family room and the kitchen. It has brightened up both rooms. I'm anxious to restain a door darker but it will have to wait until the warmer weather.

Keep the suggestions coming, still need ideas for lamps, color for tables and what to put in front of the fireplace. Still not 100% sure on the pillow color. Again, thanks for all your help!!

You have enough red in the room. There's quite a bit in the carpet, and the red clock and balls on the mantel are perfect. The burgundy pillows on the sofa don't provide enough contrast, so it makes them a little boring. The new ones look almost teal, like a deeper version of the background of the painting over the sofa. (At least, that's how they look on my monitor.) It's a very pleasing look.

I happen to have a coffee table that might look good in this space.

Groveraxle, I like the Brayden coffee table, especially since I don't have a ton of space in the room. I checked out Wayfair for a matching end table, didn't find one. What would you suggest for an end table also?

Hi Mary. Your living room is looking fabulous! I love the wall could, painted trim and fireplace surround. Drapes are terrific. Much lighter and brighter. Agree they would be perfect if you could drop the hem so they just graze the floor. You've really done a great job!
I remember working on your dining room in another post. I think it's important that the style of the rooms work together so I don't think you want to veer too far from traditional. Your new Aqua blue cushions work great with your new art, but less so with the rug. I imagine your keeping the rug? Sage olive green cushions would work with the rug, but not with the sofa. Not enough contrast.

Have you thought about bringing some of the yellow from the dining room into the living room?
Yellow / gold works pretty good with the rug, sofa and art.
I think rust also has potential. Maybe layered with ivory or a neutral from the rug that has a little texture or very small pattern.
On second thought.. Forget the pattern. Too busy against your art.

Maybe the cranberry pillows with a blue/greenish shade of throw over the back edge of sofa?

The dog was a nice pop of white...pillows in that color?

A couple of caveats: I don't know how tall an end table you need, so I just inserted some I thought would work as far as style and color. I suspect the copper one might be too short. Second, the height of your end table will determine the height of your lamp. End table and lamp together should be somewhere between 58 - 64" tall.

The lamp I show comes in 100 colors and several different styles. I matched it to the pillows just because. An iron or wood-base lamp would work as well.

wickedwhite, thanks for the kind words. I'm very happy with the room so far! I thought the green pillows were closer to the green in the rug. They do look nice with the art but they are too light for me. I do like the rust that you and groveraxle posted above. The green pillow is also available in tangerine and ruby.

Kathy, I keep going back to the burgundy to match the rug also. I did borrow the pillows from downstairs so I do need new ones. It'll take me forever to decide on a color!

Ruby looks good! Works nicely with the red in your rug, but feels a little fresher and more current than the burgundy.

I like the ruby. I agree with wicked that it's fresher than the burgundy.

goveraxle, I do like the coffee table, round end table, and the lamp. Now to convince hubby that I need to change the tables!

If I can't convince hubby to buy new tables, medium brown stain for my existing tables? Still also looking at table and floor lamps. I've always had matching so it's hard for me to find two that work well together. What would you pair with the Ovo table lamp Groveraxle posted above? If I went wood based any suggestions for table and floor? Thanks again for all your help.

Seems like the rug is causing the most grief.. any chance of replacing the rug? Purchasing new lamps, coffee & end tables plus trying to get pillows that will go with current rug will cost quite a bit.. best plan may be to keep those items which can still go with the room & invest in a plain textured rug.. one with neutral colors that will still be good when you purchase your next sofa. With a plain rug you can go crazy & get any pattern of pillows that you want.

Medium brown is pretty boring. Go dramatic. Black or ivory:

I would take it to the next level & paint baseboards & window frames out in white and freshen up the wall colors with lighter brighter paint color. Add pops of color in end tables fun pillows on couch & chairs! And decorative lighting like corners lamps or white shade to brighten up the room with books or candles on painted coffee table. Maybe a lighter rug! Fireplace is cool with white though.

Lainie, of course the rug is causing the grief! We are planning on doing hardwood floors on the second floor in the future. At that time I will replace everything in the family room. I've definitely learned my lesson to purchase everything together! So, I've decided not to invest too much money at this point. I purchased the linen drapes and the ruby pillows with the button above. I'm thinking about painting the tables all black or black legs and a stained top. If I paint them all black my iron lamps won't work. If I paint them black and stain the top my lamps will be fine. So my next step is to decide on the tables. I really like Grover's black table with the Ovo table lamp.

sgooder, I have painted the trim to match the surround, it's brightened up the whole space. I will gladly change the rug when I buy new in the future. Thanks for all your suggestions!

I hear you Mary...trying to spruce up my living room also.. but it needs a complete overhaul so just doing a bit of painting now. Hubby says why don't you get a new floor ? I say not until I can replace everything... he just don't get it...lol

Yes, black tables will add some interest.

Good luck with the sprucing Lainie! There's always something to spruce in my house! Someday I'll have that navy family room or maybe by then I'll change my mind!

Still need something for in front of the fireplace. What do you ladies think of this wire basket? There is a cord to the left of the gas unit for the blower that I need to hide.

Basket is great.. do you know the measurements of the basket? How much room between the fireplace & the chair nearby?

    marym0113 thanked Lainie D'Eon
Really love your new surround! It perfectly suits your home. If you choose a black basket, make sure you add silver birch logs or something light to create some contrast against the black firebox.

Hi Mary. This space is taking shape. I remember following your dining room makeover and I don't know why I'm so late to this party. ;-). Your fireplace surround is beautiful. You must be so happy. My suggestion for the pillows would be your favorite burgundy large pillows with the addition of maybe neutral and black lumbar pillows; paint the tables black and use burgundy lamps or maybe a light beige lamp. I just put up neutral sheer grommet linen drapes in my home and I love them. But I have discovered that they need to have enough fullness to look good so be prepared to use several panels as you would with standard sheers. Good luck!

Seajaygerns, I'm pleased with the surround! I did purchase two large pillows for the sofa and a lumbar for the chair, still need one more neutral pillow for the sofa. I have also become a fan of the neutral grommet linen drapes. Still looking for a lamp and floor lamp. I like wood table lamps but do not know what type of floor lamp to pair with them. Thanks for all your wonderful suggestions.

Suggestions for table and a floor lamp would be appreciated, thanks ladies!

Any suggestions for a table and floor lamp? Suggestions will be greatly appreciated, thanks!!

Hi, Mary. Before I look at lamps, remind me what's happening with the tables. Are you painting them black? And if I remember correctly, did you order the ruby pillows for the sofa?

    marym0113 thanked groveraxle

Hey groveraxle! I'm going to paint the tables black, loved the visual you did for me above! I'm working on the trim in the family room and kitchen area so I haven't done the tables yet.

I know you preferred the trim and doors stained dark but the white has really brightened up the whole area! When the weather is warmer I plan on staining the doors dark to match the beams.

I purchased the ruby pillows and the linen curtains are also ordered. By the way, also raised the clock above the fireplace. It looks great, thanks for the advice.

I don't think my lamps will work with black tables. I've been looking at wood table lamps but don't know what kind of floor lamp to match. I'm very happy with the progress so far. As always, thanks so much for all your help!

Hi Mary. I think I would do a matching table lamp and floor lamp. It will help bring some consistency to the room. I would keep them classic, but a little more updated. Perhaps a lamp shade in this shape. These are "Chelsea" lamps from Home Depot. (Don't be fooled by the prices; they won't be this high in the US.)
    marym0113 thanked wickedwhite

wickedwhite, I will try to find matching. I could not find the lamps above at our Home Depot so the hunt continues. I do like them, thanks for the pictures.

Those lamps are fine, but a little boring. If you're going with black tables, I'd go with one of the Color-plus lamps above to add a little spark. But any plain bronze lamp with similar shade will be fine with the lamps above. Here's one:

It doesn't have to match. You could do something like this:

Hi Mary. Since you are struggling with matching floor lamps to table lamps, I like Grovers suggestions for floor lamps and Ovo lamps, particularly in a color to coordinate with pillows. I think the dark Bronze lamps you posted will be even darker when sitting on a black end table. Let's get some nice color in there.

Seajaygerns, I agree that the dark lamps will be too dark on the tables. I will purchase lamps as soon as I do the tables. Any advice on paint vs. black stain for the tables? My husband needs a durable finish on the them, he doesn't like to use coasters!

Any advice on durability of black paint vs. black stain? The tables I plan on refinishing get a lot of use.

An oil based paint will be very durable.. get satin finish. For a stain you will need to top coat with a few coats of varnish for durability.
