What kind of countertop do you have? I ask because it looks nice and was wondering if it was a quartz. I know they have some marble look laminates, but it is hard to change out cabinets under quartz or granite.

What shape are the cabinet boxes in? Some of those old kitchens have strong wood boxes and if the layout works for you, and the cabinets are in good shape, you might consider new doors only.

White, painted or wood cabinets work with black appliances as long as you don't go too dark on the tone or color. I would get cabinets you like. The appliances can be changed out over time, or you can get a deal on a set if you prefer a different finish, but cabinets are for a very long time, so get what appeals to you.

I actually love the retro look of your cabinets and if this was my kitchen I would probably just paint them, unless they are in poor shape.

Well they are plywood and in pretty bad shape (were painted a few times ) The boxes are not in good shape. The countertop is a laminate that went in almost 50 yrs ago ...also in bad shape. I was thinking of a dark countertop and a wood grain textured talc coloured doors. Trying not go too modern in this room as the little house is about 170 yrs old.

I prefer the b/w ones myself, but if wood I wouldn't go too dark. I showed the wood examples above more for the style, but I think they are a bit dark. Tie in the black with your hardware and lighting.
