Tips for painting trim?

I have wanted to paint the golden oak trim in my house since the day I moved into our home 7 years ago. My husband is FINALLY entertaining the idea. He had me start by painting our fireplace mantel and if that turns out ok I can paint the trim, windows, etc... His main concern is that he has seen cupboards and trim painted white that look awful (streaks and pealing) and to be honest I am concerned too. It also appears that people love oak in our little town and people think I'm crazy when I say I want to paint it! haha I am mostly concerned with the windows-we just replaced them about 6 months ago and I would hate to ruin them. I am also wondering what to do about the hardware of the window ( the crank, and locks) as well as the screens. They are all a dark pewter color. Does anybody have any advice for me? Or tips for painting a whole house full of trim? I really want to do this and I know once I start I am in it for the long haul. I will attach photos of the windows but the bright light reflecting form the snow makes them hard to see. Thanks in advance for any input you may have:)
