The original front of the house had the brick wall extended out on both sides. It was knocked down to provide visibility.

What are you calling "awkward openings?" They look like windows and doors to me!

HI -- Not sure what you mean by balance ? This is a great mid-century architecture house . The transom/clearstory windows in front are what makes the architecture so great . The exterior of the house looks fine and kind of wish the wings had been left on . Maybe adding back a bit of a 24 inch high fence off the garage driveway would help . It would at least hide the grey hose storage box . You could paint the exterior or not . I think if you just jazzed up the landscaping that's all it really needs . The style of your house the post lamp needs a big globe light on it with a black post and mid century style light sconces on the garage etc. Maybe paint the bench a bright color like red so it shows .

Great house. Open up the steps more. Install the same plantings--looks like mondo grass--across the front under the windows and keep it all the same height. Replace post light and wall sconces with typical mid century modern lighting.

If you could see your way to replace the garage door, this place will rock.

Two things come to mind. If you want the windows to be less noticeable then they should not have white trim. Paint it the color of the house. The porch window can continue to have white trim. You mention balance. The windows stand out because they are at the top of a wide white wall. They would be less noticeable on a dark wall. However, I do not advocate painting the brick so I instead suggest a tall uniform hedge be grown there. It will balance with the dark upper area of the windows.
