Old side table

I have this small table I use as a night stand that is maybe from the late 1800's considering it uses flat head screws for construction. The top of the table has many debts but you can also feel the grain in the most worn spots. I want to know what kind of stain/lacquer was used originally and if it's worth preserving. Would it be weird to paint the top and leave the legs stained? I don't want it to be chic or modern but just to fix it up. Any input would be great, thanks.
