Modernizing a 50's Ranch Help with exterior!

I'm in the process of remodeling a small house. I'm stuck on the exterior. I originally planned on doing vinyl siding to keep costs down, but I have since decided that I want something more appealing/modern looking. I would still like to stay on the cheaper end of things however. I've attached a picture of the "Original Plan" and a picture of the "Current State" of the house. I like gray as a main color, and will be using a horizontal wood privacy fence on either side of the house. I also plan on using some long low wood planters with a rock bed along the front of the house to deal with the shade area where grass won't grow. So I guess my main question is I'm looking for siding options. I even like the idea of mixing siding to break up the length of the house (which is what I attempted to do with all of he gables over the porch and windows in the "Plan"

Thanks! I'm not all that familiar with style terms, so maybe mid-century wasn't the best way to describe it. The rendering windows are very close to the actual windows being used. In the current photo, the windows on there are the windows that will be used in the rest of the house.

When you say, modern, do you mean contemporary or an update? Sometimes doing something conservative and timeless is your best bet. With the existing stone work, a craftsman style update could work nicely with the shape of your house. Adding corbels, brackets, board and batten, and shake shingle siding details would be nice.

Sorry, We like midcentury, I'll take a photo of the house in it's actual current state, this photo was about 4 months ago. The rock will all come off it is beyond repair and falling away from the house. I'm looking into stucco and waiting on some quotes.

Midcentury is fine but what you do with the porch and gables will make a big difference - the rendering shows a real craftsman style double gable there. The existing porch roof has a hip roof while the garage has a gable. Another big factor is windows - I see the rendering with single hung / the new cladding has some black double hung with no muntins .. will the windows match the rendering or some combination .. you can achieve mid century modern easier with new window patterns and muntins .. Not sure about size of porch or planter but will show you this both for contemporary treatment of higher porch AND contemporary window muntin patterns ..

Also -is there anywhere inside that you have opportunity for skylights or gable lights / raised ceiling? Hard to pull off mcm without some volume in a ceiling or walls of glass ..
