Without deer you will have many more options. There are so many different styles out there but I would consider creating a counterpoint to the geometry of that hedge. Another personal preference is to add plants with fragrance. Syringa vulgaris, Lilac would be nice and give height. You will want to consider sun exposure and I would place the hosta in partial sun. If you have a heavily shaded are I would use fern. Again consult the web for what is cold hardy. Irrigation systems are designed to have areas and types of plants on different zones. This divides the total water use over a longer period of time and reduces the stress on your well/water supply.

Do keep in mind that the area right in front of the hedge will be very dry and rooty, so keep the bed out several feet. Also, who does the trimming of the hedge? You'll need several feet between hedge and new bed so the trimmer can work.

Kathy, it might help if you talk about your goals in doing what you want to do, or the reasoning behind it so we could understand it better. It's not clear to me; what exactly are you trying to get from us? It the new "border" supposed to intersect the cedar hedge at 90* or run along side it. It's helpful if you put a marker in the picture when you are talking about a specific location that may not be clear to the viewer.

(Right and Left if as we look at the picture.) At the right end of the picture I see what looks like a septic mound. Don't see any mound near the shed. (Houzz won't upload the picture now. I will come back with it later.)

I tried to upload the pictures again with some drawings overtop but not having any luck. The mound to the right is the neighbours yard. Our yard ends where the dirt meets the grass on that side. Our septic is to the left of the yard and starts about 15 feet in front of the white shed and extends 50 across. The width of the yard is 105 ft. Left lot line is about 6 ft past the garden shed . I would just like to add flowerbed in the back right corner and cut down the size of the garden. Looking for advice on size of bed or any other ideas to make this area more attractive. Thanks again.
