I have zones for shoes. In the mudroom, there's a pull-out trolley between the washer and dryer where everyday shoes go. By everyday, I mean the sneakers and flip flops you put on daily, not sometimes. In the garage, there's a ledge that all muddy/dirty activity footwear lives. Like garden clogs, sneakers for mowing the lawn, etc. NOT old cast-offs. They need to be culled and tossed! Then under the bed can have one or two pair of favorites, like a pair of slippers and maybe flip flops (we're in the south, lots of flip flops) and the rest are in the closet, whether on the closet floor, in cubbies or shoe racks over the door. Takes some discipline, but have a system that you can stick to because shoes all over the place is hard on the brain (not to mention a hazard and irritating)!

I have cubbyholes for shoes going up the laundry room wall. Flip flops are kept in pairs in a hanging pouch system on the back of the door. When boots are dry and brushed off they sit on top of the shoe cubbies. Not an overly pretty system but clean, tidy, and easy to find shoes when we are in a rush.
