Hmm..crazy how it works for me. :-)

I get the color card from SW or BM for colors I find in posts here. Next I have Lowe's make samples. Test them on 2ft by 2ft boards. If I like it, I go to HD for the paint.

Although there is a paint at Lowe's getting some good reviews that I would like to try. But HD has a $5 rebate, so might as well get Behr.

I think Ace is offering Valspar samples for $.99.

I just asked Ace. So far they say no sale on samples. Too bad. In a local Ace they sell BM so they also do BM colors. Plus Ace gave such large samples (like SW) I once used half of a sample container and did a small accent wall with it. During the last ACE sample sale the clerk said that a lot of craft people came in and bought paint for crafts. You know that "beach look" wall decoration panel that has 4-5 beach colors or that adirondack chair with 4 colors. Big sample cans at SW, but SW makes clear that their sample paint is an inferior paint. Guess you would have to clear coat their sample paint on crafts with that leftover clearcoat. :-)

Getting OT, but those huge SW cans are such a waste. And for giggles I did try to use on of their samples on a small piece of furniture knowing they leave one of the additives out- you'd have to clearcoat with something. Wish BM would bring back their small readily available samples. At $7 a pop, I spend less time sampling these days. I just donated a large box of left over paint samples. Hopefully someone can get some use out of them!
