What would you hang here?

I am looking for suggestions on what kind of art or decor to hang between the sconces in this stairwell. The walls are painted BM stone white and the space gets a lot of light due to a couple of skylights overhead. My house has contemporary decor and I love oversized art so that's what I have been looking for, but I haven't been able to settle on the perfect piece. I am hoping some new ideas might help me find something to hang in this space soon! The only thing I do not want for sure is a plain mirror. I have tried that already and it was too dull. The landing in the stairwell is not big enough to allow for a table or any floor accessories to dress the space up, so the wall decor must serve as the main focal point on its own. Thanks in advance for any help.

With the sky light, it sure would be a bright spot for a green wall or large wall planter:

Hi @jakstamp! My initial reaction was a gallery wall of black and white photos, but since you love oversize contemporary art I would go with that. Z Gallerie is my go-to resource for such works and I would be more than happy to provide you with a specific recommendation if you share your color palette with me. In the meantime, here are photos of two rooms I recently designed using abstract works from ZG that would go beautifully with your wall color. They were hung horizontally in these rooms, but they can also be hung vertically. I hope this helps! Wendi

What about a group of Shadow boxes? Makes it a little more 3d and you could put some little plants or sculpture pieces . I mixed boxes and paintings on a collage

I do a lot of work on long panel, both wood and canvas. This one is canvas, "City of Angels IV". I work with high quality acrylics and textile. If you are interested we can talk about creating one the exact dimensions of the area (which maybe one of the designers could help with) and then I can work with your palette and even fabrics to match.

What about glass wall art? We create hand blown glass elements ready to hang. The good thing with this kind of art is that you can fit the size of the composition to your space. We would be happy to help you with the project.

Thank you to everyone for your suggestions they are all awesome! I love the garden wall idea but unfortunately I do not have a green thumb :( It would be a wall of weeds haha. I will definitley check out the z galley and great big canvas sites though. It seems like a large canvas would be the easy way to make a big impact. Based on the mock ups you did acm I think the biggest canvas looks really striking. It helps so much to be able to actually see it on the wall instead of guessing on sizes so thank you so much ! I would not have extended the top of it over the sconces had I not seen it first but I love that sizing so that is what I will look for. Thanks guys !!

I do like the idea of a large canvas but I felt with your proportions you might try two squares. The first one is a rectangle canvas that I cut in two and flipped. My work is digital so if you want to see other examples or custom sizes let me know. You can see more work on etsy https://www.etsy.com/shop/LizDuerStudio

jakstamp, please do not waste that space on overpriced prints. buy real instead, if you have none where you live, what about saatchiart or etsy online.

I have one other idea for a truly cool affect, let me go rummage.

you can make it look like you are walking in the middle of a forest, across a high mountain bridge. enter a space ship, a giant fish tank, the middle of a painting. the ideas are endless.

Rather than wall art I would put a beautiful metallic copper or gold finish on this wall and make it into an architectural feature.

I'd hang 3 identical mirrors vertically in that space.

And thank you to user having fun for your suggestion :) I agree that whatever I do in this space needs to be done right! I want to love whatever hangs in this space every time I walk down over the stairs. I live in a fairly remote area so there are not a lot of options and shipping can be very expensive. I will check out etsy as I had not thought of that. Thanks again :) ps the murals are amazing !

I like "Bell Tone":) I would suggest going to the Modern Masters website and checking out their product line. It is tricky to use, so I can send you a link to a video we created of spraying the metallic paint with an hvlp sprayer....or if you're in or around Seattle I can come and do it for you!

well naturally jaks, i would not have suggested otherwise. i love a bit of woah in a spot, dont you? ; - )

I would find a cool rug that appeals to you and works with color scheme. painting is too typical.

you could do above or a tapestry, but the cost will be up there, because, at least to me, if it is going to get such fan fare, you need to know that the cleaning lady has not got one by the back door.

in the meantime found my books, here are a few better examples

I would hang a set of framed botanicals...check out Sundance...Robert Redford home...these are so beautiful and would blend well with your lighting...so beautiful. The are large so you could do 2 or 3 stacked.

Z-Gallery sells nothing but mass-produced giclees (prints on canvas), and at prices that are almost the same as original art. Your home is nice, and it doesn't seem to me that giclees will do it justice. Here are some original pieces that might fit your space. A narrow and long mirror
  • 10 years ago

yes,so we can all look fat when we don't fit on the mirror. lol

I have been kinda taken with these lately. and the grouping allows you to be more involved in the art process, seen them on etsy, painted or a natural wood version.

i don't know what do you think? it is definitely cutting edge?

  • PRO

Not really cutting edge...but very artsy and beautiful!! I have seen these for years a metal artist makes them in Hawaii...he would paint metal strips in vibrant colors or do subtle interpretations of the seasons on them.....or do a heating technique that would turn the metal different colors..very interesting...I have always enjoyed this type of art.

Anything hung between the two sconces is crowded. This is why I suggest the metallic wall finish.

Well belltone, no problem letting you win, but would it not be better if you read first? maybe even showed us why yours is better?

Ok, taking into consideration all of your comments what about this print - oversized and could be done as a canvas or framed. Thoughts ?

If you like that art, then go with it - art is personal.

I think it is good if you have selected the art....but that said....the photo just dosent seem to be a good fit for a stairway...maybe a family room..this is why...when going up the stairs it is very difficult to focus in on such a large picture..you never really enjoy looking at it from a distance..like on a family room wall....I would keep the pictures smaller in a set..or go with an abstract of some type.
