Probably not normal, depending on exactly what you are smelling.

Is it all of the burners or just one in particular?

Does the flame have any yellow color in it?

Is it natural gas or propane?

Natural gas

The flame has a little yellow on top

And the gas smell is especially noticeable with two 22k BTU burners at HIGH.

There should be no yellow at all with natural gas.

First, make sure that the burner venturi tubes are centered, straight, and fully engaged over their brass orifices (pushed as far as possible toward the front of the rangetop). Also verify that the orifice fittings are not loose on their threads.

Next, you will need to adjust the air shutters on those burners to increase the air in the air/gas mixture until the flame has no yellow at all but still does not separate from the burner surface when on high. Check the manual or online videos at bluestar.com for this adjustment procedure. It is very easy to do (or you could call your installer back and get them to do it).

Are you running the exhaust fan while the burner is on? Do you start them before you light the burners? If I run two burners at HIGH for a few minutes without the fan, I can detect some gas odor. I've got a pretty good sense of smell. As would be expected, if I run the exhaust fan it's much more difficult to detect.

If you are planning on running a few burners for an extended period of time, I would say more than five minutes, you should turn the exhaust fan on prior to lighting the burners. It's a good habit to run the exhaust anytime you fire up a burner. Doing it earlier will help start the airflow in the right direction.

You should not have any gas odor when operating the 22k burners. The only time I smell any odor on my BS 22k burners are if the burner takes several clicks to light. You might get a short burst of gas smell but your saying the odor is there when you are using the 22k burner. I have NO odor from my burners when in use. Not normal or right to be smelling gas when your burner is on, maybe a leaky valve? Although in that case you would probably smell the gas when your burners are off too....

Yeah, there is no odor when the burners are off, so valves are not leaking.

You should keep investigating this, it is not normal...Have you talked to a Bluestar tech re: this?

Maybe it's a loose or improperly connected Venturi tube. The gas will only flow through that tube when engaged by turning the knob. So you wouldn't necessarily smell has when the burners are not in use.

I also agree with the other posters and echo the notion that the smell of gas when using the burner is not normal, except for the brief few seconds it takes for the igniters to light the gas after turning it on.

The gas won't flow if the venture tube isn't fully seated in the slot. The cleaning lady is always pulling it out when she cleans the grates. So, I have to reset them all of the time.

When I referred to a gas smell. I can tell when gas has burned off if the range top has run for a time and I haven't turned on the ventilation. I think that may be what tigrangrig is experiencing.
