When we first started working for this client, they had one full bathroom and one water closet (sink & toilet only) and neither was particularly functional. We started with the main bathroom by assessing the overall needs of the household.

The house itself doesn't have a lot of storage, and since the enclosed shower was so tiny and dark, it made sense to combine the bath and shower. Additionally, the vanity sink was very small and the cabinet space under the sink was also. The entry was very cramped. And finally, the green tile was very outdated and very bright.

We added 12" from the adjacent room to the vanity wall so that the vanity could be a standard depth/size. We chose a wall hung vanity to allow for the vent on the floor and to allow for kids' stools to be stored underneath.

We turned the enclosed shower into a linen closet for additional storage and moved the entry door out to the hall. Using tile from tilebar.com from their scrap lots section saved a lot of money. Using porcelain 12 x 24 tiles on the floor with some texture makes the space look much larger than it is, and still provides some protection from skidding. The tub is the only one in the house and we picked a 7ft version to accommodate nice bubble baths once in a while.

We used a particularly elegant marble tile that was precut as the accent tile in seemingly random spots on the floor as well as the interior of the niche in the tile surrounding the tub. It helped to tie the two different tile styles together. For the subway tile around the tub, we ran some vertical and some horizontal to add a little visual interest since it is such a large area.

The client really wanted the bathroom to be contemporary, rather than full blown modern. The clean lines of the various fixtures and the lack of casement around the linen closet helped us achieve the overall look. The brown paint color on the wall keeps the bathroom from looking too modern, and adds warmth to the overall space.

We still have to install the shower enclosure and put up a window treatment, but the client is very happy thus far. We will put up photos of the finished product once we are done.
