Hi, from the pictures it looks like there is not enough room, but your description makes it seem as if there is. Can you try moving your brown living room chairs away from the window/door and across from the red sofa. That should make you living area seem open and cozy/intimate. You have a lot of plants. You can put a small one on top of the corner table, a tall one in the corner between the door and the red sofa, put one next to the red chair. If you can move your dinning table away from the door. It makes it look small and it too cute. Put another tall plant in the corner by that door. Hopefully there is enough room and walk space for you. Yes your rug colors should be golds, creams, grays, pops of reds, and greens. A round rug under the dinning table, not to big, and one under your living room furniture should separate the spaces. Table lamps can go on the corner table and floor lamps in the corners where I suggested the tall plants- corners by furniture and by the doors. As for wall art you can use the patterns or styles of the sofa or vintage/Victorian. You can also use decorative screens, fabrics on the walls. Candle holders are always nice. I believe you can get away with using antique brass or brass decorate items. All your wood seems to be in the same family so there is no need to paint over them unless you like that look. If yes use creams or grays. I hope this helps and you get more ideas.

I do not have any plants in the room currently. I made a P.S. to note that all that in pc number two was last year when we moved. Nothing is there but the items I posted of the furniture that is. Table is oval and 130cm long with four chairs, coffee table, end cabinet two 60's chairs, couch and two arm chairs that is all that is in the room presently.

Where the table is there is 10 feet from big glass doors to back of entry door. A very STUPID design of this entire apartment. Where the two red arm chirs are, the are at the entry door to the room. Its a bit close yes. But there is ample room for people to sit and not bang knees on sofa table or get trampled between living area and dining table. I tried the moving of the table it didnt work becuae then I would have no sitting area according to the floor plan. I couldnt place a love seat at the dining table area and then there will be no place for the rest of the living room chairs and coffee table. The little corner triangular table is actually a 60's cabinet which I will use for my stereo which will be hidden. There are two areas on the wall for wall lighting. So I am not sure if to add so many lamps. Wont they clash with the wall lights since they will be in the same area of the lamps? The area running couch to dining table across the space is 14 feet long or wide.

Since couch set is multi colored, should I still go with multi colored rug or solid? The dining set is nice and so is the coffee table, but I am bored with all that brown wood, it looks so dated. There are no creams in the couch set but a light pale antique type gold color. I wanted to stray from a set of gold and brass and old fashioned. I wanted to see IF I could use this set and pull off an eceletic look?. That is why i am askig if I can work this mess I have. I can always remove the two 60's chairs and only bring them out once guests arrive. But then I am ending up with all matchy matchy which is so lame. I cant afford to reupholster the furniture, they were cleaned and looks lovely and fresh. I am also annoyed with the green wall. When I painted the wall I had different furniture in mind, then I found this set and it changed the whole atmosphere of the room, something is just not right. Should I repaint the walls again? I think the floor and wall colour looks modern (as is open plan), but your furniture style is definately more traditional, and unless you change your furniture, it will never look particularly spacious. I would work on creating a warm and cosy are- embrace the fact that it is compact room. I would make the seating end away from the window wall - "ground" the setee along the opposite wall. I think you need a large rug in the sitting end, to define that area. I would actually almost go wall to wall with it, but not have one at the dining table. I I think a persian rug, in nice deep colours. I would also swap the coffee table, for an upholstered ottoman, which will give you additional seating when necessary. Put the coffee table in the corner, as an occasional table. I would cover the mis- matched chairs in somthing that matched the lounge suit. The more different colours an patterns you have, the more crowded it will look. I would invest in either: floor to ceiling/wall to wall window treatments, so that when dining, they can be pulled across for a solid wall effect, which will look luxurious. Have them pull completely from one side, so it keeps the doorway free during the day. OR alternativelyu, a blind (roman??) that is again wall to wall, but mounted at ceiling height, to keep the windows as open as possible during the day. Recover the dining room chair cushions with the same fabric you use on the other chairs. I agree with you about the wall paint-something deeper=maybe even a very strong colour feature wall - deep salmon(rose? -whatever the couch is) Keeping to a monchromatic colour palette ( limited to 1 colour) will help make the room appear larger. good luck

I don't know if you are very attached to the dining room set, but I've seen coffee tables that magically rise and become dining room tables. You could eliminate the d.r. set completely and raise the coffee table for meals. As for colors, what if you stained all the wood a deep ebony and went for the color scheme black, coral, and beige?

Hi Connie, the ceiling to floor is not a window but huge sliding doors to the big balcony. I cannot install a blind runner because there will be no place to do it really, it will cut off more usable space and it will be a zigzag thing that will not work. . Those are antique French chairs I bought some weeks ago. I didnt cover them that way. They have been professinally cleaned and are quite striking in real. but they are clashing with everything. I do not have space for an ottoman of any kind, the round table is 90cm and anything bigger than that will nnot work no space. I cant put that table in any corner as I dont have space for such a big table in a corner, especially since I only have two corners to play with. I wish you could see it in real cuz the suggestions you gave cant work, there is no room to move that love seat anyplace but where it is or at the entry door which looked too busy so I moved it. I do not have to keep those two 60's chairs they can retire to the study and bring them out once guests come. The dining table is jjust stuck to the sliding door cuz I amn ot finished its just place there. I cnat move it much tho cuz then I cant open or close the entry door. Kits, I cant stain the antique french set. I will ruin it, the fabric is built into the wood, wont be able to go there at all. I can however opt for ther other items all being ebony or darker or even lighter. I dont know what the heck to do. its just a mess and I cant afford to pay for much more. This is decoratig on a tight tight tight budget here. I do not have to keep the dinign set at all ,but then the only eating option is the kitchen once people come over or if weather permits the balcony. The coffee tbale cant rise but that is a dang good idea. i do not have to keep the two 60's chairs in the room either if its causing me headaches. I do love them but I know they dont match jack squat. Nothing matches, its just a big heap of mess in that room.

What if I went almond color wall and then stain or paint all the left over furniture a deep cream, will that make the room seem bigger? Will it clash less with the love seat set? The whole problem is the dang doors and big heater behind a door that is eating up about 3.5 feet of the one wall with the dining table and then 3.5 or more with the door adjacent to the two red chairs, So in all, I am actually not playing with 14x10 but more 9x10 on living room side and then 7 by dining room side.

I painted the room before I got stuff that was my fault and mistake and expense. I hate this place where I live but we just move an dits too expensive to move so soon again. Its just a big nightmare in all rooms.

well, i think you need to learn to live with what you have, as your options/capabilities dont seem to leave you with much choice. basically, the furniture you have is probably just too big/unsuited to such a small room, particularly if you are not keen to change/compromise on things like swapping the large coffee table for an ottoman, etc. I think paitning will be your ownly chance to make changes.

A floor plan with measurements would help. Maybe someone can come up with a better arrangement of the furniture.

Connie, i dont have room for an ottoman, they are huge over here and the small ones are too microscopic and are small foot stools, so I dont have the choice to put a square shape one, its not that i dont want to change, I dont have the possibilities as you all have back home in the States. I live in Germany now and not everything is exactly as it is there. Ottomans are quite large here and it will take up the whole room. I did say I am willing to move the two 60's chairs. The coffee table cant fit in any corner its 90cm and therefore will eat up space I dont have. its not like I cant get another coffee tabel that is smaller, i can certainly look for one or a chest or a box or something, I can look one, I can remove the two chairs and only keep the red ones. But it still boils down to the green wall and red floral chairs, in real the chairs are very overwhelming.

Yvonne the room is 14 x 10 feet, the big white door is 14 feet long the wall where teh dining table is is 10 feet but not all 10 feet is usable. The other wall with sofa is 10 feet, that is the only wall in the entire room that is fully used up. The wall with the two red chairs is broken from the 14 feet by means of a 3.5 foot door. The room is basically is small oblong room, two walls to the left and right, one to the back looking into the room and the tall glass sliding doors, that is it in a nutshell. Its an annoying layout.

Do you have more pictures of the whole space available? Is there another area where you could move the mid century chairs for a two seat conversation arrangement? What are your thoughts about slip covering the chairs that match the love seat?

Is there room to use the sofa and a console or buffet to divide the two areas? Photo is just an idea to use the sofa for divider.

Yes this has more space but I do like the sitting area anchored by the rug and the dinning without.

A long lean table close to the was vs. round that eats up a lot of space for dinning area.

Thanks for your posts KJ, the last pic is nice I wish I had that much space. That room has some big walls. this room is a total of only 170 sq feet total and oblong. No place for a buffet, no place for anything other than what I posted.

Yes, there is the study and I can surely put those Mid cent charis i there and if people come over I can easily grrab them and stick them in the hodge podge area for more seating. _They do have to remain in here by any means. No place to put couch and then table behind not one drop. I cant even put a bench in front the empty side of the coffee table.

Kj, I am also opened to getting rid of the entire dinign room set. The table is not round but oval and not that wide but I am opened to removing that set. Been thinking of it today and wondering if I had so much as basement space I would just chuck it in there until I can make better. If I had the whole room for living room it might be able to do some more things with it. I have four chairs and table in the kitchen, but that is not nice to have dinner party in the kitchen, hence my wanting to keep something for eating in that area. The long table or oblong table do look nice.

Hi Stage, I love those chairs the mid century ones. They aer about my favorite, they are actually a shade of olive green with a lighter goldy green and then the dark browngreen it just looks brown on the pics. they are soooooooo comfy. The room is just obling 10x14 170sq feet. I dont have a plan of the room and taking pics actually make the space look more crowded.

I would ditch the dining set, use the entire space as loungeroom, and eat in the kitchen. If you have freinds over for meals, the do a furniture shuiffle, bring the table and chairs in from the kitchen, or eat on the balcony. Yoiu have to think about what you need the room to funtion as most of the time. Obviously, if you have dinner parties 4 nights a week, this wouldn't be that practical. But if you are like most people, and have dinner parties once a month/season/decade (thats me) i think i would make the space more "me friendly" for the raminder of that time. You are the one who has to live there.

Two narrow table examples. much narrower than regular dinning tables. Since you are in Germany, I'm guessing you have an Ikea you could get to? Trying to think easy and accesible for you. Thoughts on doing a bench on one side against the wall? Also you have the patio right there. Maybe use some outdoor friendly chairs(stackable?)for the patio and dining set that are all the same. Then you could store extra chairs on the patio when not in use. Sorry If I go overboard on brainstorming. I have tight rooms to work with too. So I'm alway curious about jigsawing a room together. ;)

If you make the room comfy for everyday use, you can always have a folding big table hidden under your bed for parties. Kit and connie, I like all of ya'lls ideas. I have been to Ikea today. couldnt find quat. I didnt see any thin tables. Remember IKEA USA and Ikea EU carries somewhat different items. I am considering moving that table completely and the two 60's chairs, but then once table is moved and its only the love seat set it will look bare lol. So it goes from crowded to bare. I have to play with it on the weekend. today I was mostly shopping for wall mirrors for hall and bedroom as well as lamps for bedroom and hallway. Both places I am in a frenzy also, so its not only the living room. We moved in six or 5 months ago and it seems we still have nnot really began to live. I like the Bench idea a whole lot against the wall. I saw an ottoman 80x60x40 the only one Idea had and it was pressboard covered with cheap fabric that looked like a kids playroom and it was quite pricy. I will keep looking perhaps on ebay. I like those fake leather ones they look good on this size. Was even thinking of a little glass wood table i have its small 70x45 cm and chippendale style with cane and glass will post a pic. I initiall ywnated to use that and then said it was too tall.

Do you think it would really look so bare once you account for more accessories in the room? You may have gotten use to too much in one space with trying to keep all the chairs in there. That one I know all to well. My living room looked naked when I first started eliminating what didn't work in the room. Slowly it came together with good planning.
The right sized end tables, rug, lights, etc. will quickly fill, without over stuffing the space. Especially when you ground that area with rug.

The first picture on here I like a lot. It's a pleasing arrangement with not a lot of space. It has shared end tables for the chairs and sofa. Saves space and fills adequately. They are all pretty though. Man I love looking at other people's clean and pretty rooms.

The thing is I amwaiting on one room that is supposed to be my dining room- The owner landlord has sealed it off and has stuff in there that once day will be removed. one day I will have that room and it will be a dining room hence the reason I was just biding time int he living room area, eventually I will have a real dining room. But as I said the landlord used to occupy this apartment it was once nearly 3,000 square feet which was broken into two spaces. One small room is sort of belongin to this side but he still has stuff in there. Once he removed his stuff I will have that room when that will be? I have no idea. But at some point in time, if I remain living here I will have a dining room. I LOVE THE OTTOMAN IN THAT LAST PIC but you need a wopping big room for such a thing. I will post pics of my foyer tomorrow. That is the only room in the house that is completely finished and I am really please with what I did. It looks bright and cheerful and very welcoming and pretty. And I did it all by myself. that is what I wnat to hope for the living room that it will look as prettty as this large foyer. I was at Ikea today, and just about all the furniture was white or cream colored. I am now really going to hit head on wall and come to a final decision in the next dAys of painting the chairs and table white or cream and brightening up that room. A small sectional in any color you like would unify the room,declutter, and give the most seating. You could even get one that has a chaise. There are many stores that sell nice ones very inexpensively in a solid microsuede or velvet look. Then simply build off the color of the sectional with a rug and wall color. If you keep it somewhat monochromatic, like the gray room you like, it may make the room feel bigger, calmer and more sophisticated. I don't know what you do in this room, but if you watch tv you could even put the back of the sectional to the dining area and the tv on the opposite wall. And to make the room more current you could paint the dining set yourself to complement the sectional, in posibly a rustic gray white, or even a shiny laquer for a different look, in any color you choose - something bright for fun! Simply paint the set with a good primer first. I painted 4 wood rocking chairs for our beach house porch, including primer in a couple of afternoons, letting the paint dry inbetween coats. They are now a shiny white laquer and they look great!

Hi Annette I dont qute understand your post, what sectioinal? I have a set I just bought and in my original post I said i want to work around it not sell and buy something else. I have no room whatsoever for a chaise lounge. this room will have exactly waht I posted four dinign chairs a table, couch two arm chairs and maybe the two 60's chairs and the small end cabinet and coffee table noda else will be in there except light wall stuff. No room for a German sectional they are quite HUGE hence my reasoning for wanting the French set, they are made smaller and narrower. I am however, goig to go light for the chairs, coffee table and end cabinet to lighten up the space. will remove the two 60'S CHAIRS and see what plays, then I will üut them back and remove the eitire dinign set and see how that plays. I just have to m ix and move and see what happens, but before I do that I have to try this weekend to paint thos dang charis and then I can see what is happening.

The space is really small since 10 x 15 feet is the standard size for just a dining room. Since you have the patio, have you thought of enclosing it for a dining or living room (depending on which space is nearer your kitchen for serving food), keeping the large window opening as the doorway between the two rooms, and perhaps having the wall of windows on another wall of the newly closed room? In most cases, having enclosed space for daily, year-round use is much better than having it as seasonal outdoor living space. I also believe the proposed "twin" rooms will be beautiful and wonderful places for entertaining.

Also to pipsqueaky: I love French provincial too, and I definitely would keep all the furniture. I like the mint green walls, and I believe an area rug that has the rosy red of the upholstery and the mint green of the walls would look great. If you do enclose the next room, matching area rugs and the same color scheme will connect the two spaces very nicely.

Invest in floor lamp table combo units or shelf lamp combo units rather than trying to use full sized end tables but giving you some table space to make up for no coffee table. The shelf lamp combo would enable you to display some treasures. The floor lamp table combo will hold a coffee cup or glass. A narrow end table lamp combo would provide some small storage and a table top.

Invest in chairs that are comfortable enough and yet sized to do double duty as both dining table and casual seating.

I love the photo skylinewater contributed because it shows the walls in a cheerful, light yellow. I like the way the coral upholstery is a punch of color against the yellow, and I like the vintage chandelier in the photo as well. You might upholster the brown chairs in a brighter golden yellow brocade that would harmonize with light yellow walls and yet make a statement. To tie the two rooms together, you might place a coral runner on the French provincial table. Since the dining chairs have white pads, you might place matching or harmonizing white throw pillows on the coral upholstery in the living room area. I personally love French provincial, and I think you CAN make it blend with more modern pieces if they have the same wood tones and upholstery colors. You need a much larger rug in the living room, and I would suggest you get two matching rugs for the living area and for the dining area. I would suggest a fairly bold black print with some lemon yellow to anchor the rooms and make everything flow together.
