You'd be surprised what paint and new hardware can do to a piece. Personally I'd paint it black with silver highlights on the decorative fronts of the drawers and use brushed silver knobs. Recently I couldn't find knobs to fit an old piece of furniture so I spray painted the knobs with a hammered silver color by Rust Oleum and they looked so much better.
