Bench length vs. length of a dining table?

I found a dining table i like, which is 60" and the bench in 62" or 50". Which one should I buy? Should the bench be longer than the table or vice versa. Thanks!!

Careful, the answer could be complicated. Sometimes people are choosing a bench for one side of a table and chairs for the other sides. The bench is being used because the wall in back of it is close and the space tight so that chairs couldn't be pushed far enough back to comfortably get in and out. In this case it is very important that the bench is longer so people can slide in. It will never be slipped under the table and the added length helps getting in safely.

That is a problem with the Houzz discussion forum. Even seemingly simple questions like this get all kinds of answers from people that don't have all the information, and don't know they are missing it, or are simply unqualified to answer.

I have a 72 inch table and just want less chairs...that's why I want a bench. Can I do a 52 inch bench or will that look odd? I will have 2-3 chairs on the other side depending on the occasion.
