It looks like it's all on one stem. If you look very carefully has there been damage to the bottom of the stem such as a nibbling slug or snail, wind breakage or something cause by a misplaced foot?

Generally, I think clematis are happier with organic mulch such as composted leaves or shredded bark since it will gradually break down and improve the soil texture.
