Growing close together vs uncrowded

First photo is from 2011, the last year prior to 2016 I grew tomatoes. I really spaced them out, each plant must have had 25 square feet. The plant, a big beef, grew more outward and less upward. I believe each big beef plant had more tomatoes too. This year I squeezed a bunch into a raised bed. I think I learned something. Next year I want to add a couple more beds, so I can space them out, plus I will grow in the ground too. Makes sense as the lot I am on was formally a tomato farm.
