I think one or a few good-sized related items with a white or cream background would work well to nicely contrast the cabinetry wood color and given there is some shadow on the shelf (unless there's a light inside) and given the frig. below is white/cream. A set of 3 decorative kitchen canisters of varying heights may be an option. If the vintage lanterns on top of the cabinets are a look you like, you could consider this first vintage French fleur-de-lis set, or any other set that fits your style.

over the fridge isnt a great spot to store wine.... kinda too warm.

love the idea of a cat lookout, if you had a climbing cat.

otherwise, mixing bowls and large photos seem best suggestions thus far. or a single striking sculpture.

cookbooks would make me happiest personally, but combined with something decorative.

This isn't the best photo but you get the idea. We lit the space above our refrigerator and placed a very high quality floral arrangement in a pretty container. Added nice color and filled the space. Have fun!
