Look under the container and under the rim. Any snails? Go out after dark with a torch and see if you can catch the culprit.

Oddly enough - never a one to be seen. I'm presuming the slug wool perhaps does work to stop them. The leaves are clean too - no sign of any obvious caterpillars or bugs etc. Just odd & hugely frustrating. It's the only one of my 30 odd plants that's being hit so badly :(

They are there somewhere - maybe in the drain holes.

if we are suggesting slugs.. then your presumption about slug wool is wrong .. or.. they lied to you ...

and.. bTW ... what is slug wool ... if they can crawl over glass.. i dont see where wool will stop them ...

LOL - slug wool was a new one on me too. It's supposedly a deterrent because it absorbs the moisture from the slug & makes them uncomfortable. TBH - I must confess to only having put that down AFTER the damage was done and only as an additional deterrent as I (perhaps stupidly) presumed it was a more airborne attack. But given you all feel slugs to be the issue I checked again under the pot (& the others in the yard) & did indeed find a few. So thank you all - least I've got an enemy firmly in my sights now. :) Let you know how things progress.

Salt = Slug Deterrent

Salt is not a slug deterrent. It only kills by contact ie only if applied directly to the slug/snail. Salt also kills plants so adding it to a container will do your plant no good. In a wet climate all you would achieve by sprinkling salt around plants is saline soil in short order.

It is a potted plant, so my suggestion was to sprinkle salt around the container to stop slugs from getting up to it.

Logan, you made no actual suggestion for method of application. As I said, salt is not a deterrent. It has to touch the slug to affect it. In a damp climate salt is useless unless sprinkled directly onto the slug. Salt is hygroscopic. It will be diluted and dissipated almost immediately. Even proprietary slug baits have to be reapplied constantly.

Btw, I believe that in a container it is more likely to be snails than slugs, since they are great climbers and, having shells, venture further from the shelter of the ground. Regarding the wool, my allotment neighbour tried it and reduced snail damage. Whether that was coincidence or cause I don't know.
