Champion and Champion II are some of the very best earlyish hybrids. Very productive and a great sweet flavor, too. Bred for and perfect for sandwiches. One area that could use improvement is uniformity of fruit size, however. Flavor, shape and other characteristics of fruits (like skin quality) are uniform, just the size can vary from about 20oz to 5oz. For the home gardener, this is not a problem (just make smaller sandwiches,) but for can be a pain for market gardeners.

Productivity is not uniform, either. Although, it is generally more productive than similar hybrids, one plant out of about a dozen on average will produce 2-3 times more than the others. This is not a problem! But if you do get one plant that is almost wider than it is tall, keep it. Yields from 40-60lbs on those jumbo plants are not uncommon. Several university trials have reproduced similar quirks in productivity.
