Help! We Have NO Design Skills - Master Bedroom is Sad!

Help! My husband and I have been in this home for 5 years and still have no idea what to do with our bedroom. The only thing we are keeping is the bed. We are looking for new nightstands, something to put a tv on, filler (plants, a chair, ???) and carpet. We have been to the furniture and flooring stores multiple times, but walk out not knowing what to do. Ideas appreciated :)

Even if you have no skills, do you know what you like? What sort of colors appeal to you? Do you like things that are old-fashioned or modern? If you don't offer any personal preference, you'll end up with someone's idea of a dream bedroom. Designers take your personality and turn it into furniture. Help them to be able to do that.

Look at photos of master bedrooms in Houzz and save those that appeal to you.

That should trigger a starting point.

I once read that you can look to your clothes closet for help in determining your decorating colors and style. What do you like to wear? You have a wonderful space to work with. I am guessing you have a baby and a doggie?

I agree with the other poster who suggested you look at photos on Houzz. I'd add that when you search in "Photos" that you search with "tufted headboards" as your search term. You'll see many, many bedrooms that might inspire you!

The blue drapes are too much of a focal point, change them for something neutral. Some art you love on the walls. Good luck.

It's tricky to find an attractive solution for the pet beds. And it looks like you have two? Would they sleep in something like this?

I'm trying to gather what your look is -- are you keeping the bedding? It's a tailored look is it?

    The mirror seems contemporary....

what material is the tv unit - distressed finish? Let us know what you'd call your pieces, and what's staying...and I wonder if your curtains are black.

Your bedroom should be a sanctuary where you only have things you "love." Start off with developing a color palette. This palette should include the color of the headboard, since you are sure that you are keeping it. The wall paint color should be a beautiful, soothing tone, perhaps a warm grey blue to complement the headboard. The room is monochromatic, so bring in color with bedding fabrics and draperies. There is lots of room in this space, so you have a variety of options for spacial arrangement. Lastly, your lighting should be dimmable so that you can create low light that is relaxing and soft.

If bed is staying on that wall - what about wallpaper there? Seems you like tan/neutral, and would use teal as accent / but new bedding too.

Not sure that colorful lamps [if you bought/ liked] would fill your space -- maybe colorful new bedding and larger lamps, etc.

There is a new Houzz article: ["IS MIDNIGHT BLUE THE NEW BLACK"[(https://www.houzz.com/magazine/is-midnight-blue-the-new-black-stsetivw-vs~65084169?utm_source=Houzz&utm_campaign=u3049&utm_medium=email&utm_content=gallery15)

Your dark curtains are that blue. Replace your bedspread with the same color, and consider a wallpaper or stencil pattern to add interest to one or more wall. Your beige headboard and other furniture will work in contrast. Raise the curtain rod to the bottom of the crown mold; there should still be enough fabric to puddle, but it will also make the wall seem a bit taller.

I amazed that you've been to the furniture store multiple times, and no one at the store has given you any advice. A lot of these stores offer design services, and a complimentary consultation.

Smaller reading chair, larger nightstands in white, and coordinating art or mirrors above the nightstands. You can fit a very long dresser below your tv and get a lamp for it to bring lighting around the room when the tv is off. Great bed and bedding!

You can do such great things with this room! I do think the drapes are taking away from how beautiful your bed is.

If you would like to keep drapes, I would suggest some with a heavier weight and a liner. This will give you a lush appearance, and provide light control.

If you prefer to totally change the look of the windows, bamboo shades would look lovely. They provide privacy and light control, with either a light filtering or blackout liner. Bamboo shades provide a designer look and add texture to the room.

    Hope this helps!

If you keep the curtains, I would darken your walls. If you keep the bedding, I would layer it with a quilt underneath the duvet. You can find quality and affordable quilt sets on Overstock. Ex.
