Add a mosaic backsplash and new modern handles on the cabinets, add some crown moulding to the top of the cabinets and repaint to maybe a grey. Perhaps a new light fixture as well.

You could try refinishing/painting the cabinets. Depending on what kind of cabinets they are, you might be able to just get new drawer & door fronts for them and then paint the frames to match. I would definitely get new drawer pulls and knobs in something that's more your style. You'd be amazed how this detail can really change the look of cabinets.

The walls look yellow. Are they? Unless you love yellow, I'd paint. If you want to take it to the next step, I'd put in a tile back splash to give it some personality. Both of these are pretty simple DIY projects.

Looks like a great space! Should you want to redo the kitchen at a later time, you have a nice open floor plan to work with.

It all depends on your budget and style....
-new cabinet hardware
-new faucet
-perhaps even change the kitchen light
....all inexpensive fixes but set you on the way to personalising the kitchen.
-if money exists in the budget, have the cabinets either professionally painted or stained (depending on the look you're going for). Then you will have to bring someone in to complete the parts that you cannot bring in with the cabinets.

I would add crown moulding trim to the tops of the cabinets and paint them or stain the moulding to match the cabinets. I would change the hardware and hinges also to update the look. You could also add a tile backsplash and change the paint color of the room. I would also update the lighting.

The area is a little sad, definitely a backsplash and wall paint change will really help. Light fixture, too, although it's not terrible. The cabinets and countertips look pretty good as they are.
