Should I redo or paint my water damaged wood ceilings

Our ceilings were damaged by ice dams. Should I replace the wood or paint it white? I am going for a midcentury modern look.

Personally I would repair it. It fits the design of the house. Painting it will wash away the detail in the room making it look average.

I'm having the roof fixed first :) Im just not sure about the ceiling design. Part of me loves the wood and it's actually very light where it's no water damaged. However I wonder if it's too dated and white would help to make it modern

kitchen cabinets and oak window trim are dated. the ceiling is just fab.

No please don't paint that magnificent ceiling. The character, patina and lustre of the wood is stunning. Especially critical if you want MCM flavor!! Have the wood soda blasted clear to remove the water marks and restain the ceiling clear. As already mentioned the dark window coverings need to go. The kitchen floor needs upgrading, so do that first before venturing forward. Take a cue from other classic kitchens like yours and go for solid white or pale gray countertops, def not granite here - it will like wrong.

Don't paint the ceiling white.....cringe.....the ceilings make that house unique. Love that idea Rusty posted. I'd kill for that kitchen.

I would not paint it either, but I would look into other options for lighting than the track lighting shown. Not sure what, but the white track lighting is an eyesore to me. If you are going to be repairing the ceiling anyway, now might be the time to consider changes that would require additonal wiring.

PS: if possible run wire to the open shelving to the island (are you on slab or crawl space?). The dark chasm thats there now bugs me... It would look way better illuminated with LEDs, especially in the evening.

Ok will not paint the ceiling, glad to hear I'm not the only one who loves it. Hopefully they will be able to find the same beautiful wood as it is not sandable. Sadly some of it's beauty I think is the way its aged.

I have also thought of replacing the trim with white but it's everywhere in the house so that may be prohibitively expensive for now any way (insurance is covering the ceiling).

Rusty Empire love the kitchen example you showed, thanks! I agree re granite it's not right for this kitchen. Was actually contemplating concrete or maybe quartz. Love the stainless but not sure regarding practicality. Also although the chasm isn't quite as dark as in the picture I love the idea of lighting.

    Thanks!
