I need to liven up my living room and choosing a rug.

I need help finishing up this room and choosing an area rug. Should I change the pillows, the art, the curtains, accessories? I know I need a larger rug and would appreciate suggestions. Please help. Thank you so much.

Hi, Pam! You had requested photos of the living room you were seeing behind my artwork on Etsy, but for some reason, I could not get them to upload. I am uploading them here instead - Hope that is okay. In my opinion, art is the soul of a room, so don't skimp on your art. Then when you want to redecorate, it is so easy. You change artwork and pillows, shifting your older art to other locations in the home, and you have a room that is fresh and new, with minimal expense and effort. I like to keep large furniture pieces neutral, and bring in color with the art and accessories. It is a breeze to redecorate that way. Hope this helps!

I agree with you totally. Thank you so much. You have beautiful artwork. The room is gorgeous.

I like the design of the rug, but yes, it should be larger. Consider the color of the upholstered pieces you have when selecting your rug. Sometimes adding a soft throw on a sofa or an additional piece of art is all you need. You have a good start in your current pieces.

Yes it did. The pictures help a lot. I think adding green in the summer, gray in the winter and maybe mixing it up like the last picture would be fu. It gives me lots of options for change, especially when I'm feeling the need for more boldness and more calm. That is a good way to deal with my fickleness. Thanks of much.

but i am not with you, so computer may be playing with colors. note the green is apple green - yours is reading christmas. and their purple is far more red than yours. i am not saying it will not work, though i have doubts about those pillows, but you do need to make adjustments for those color variations, no?

I am seeing many great ideas posted. I LOVE LOVE LOVE your chairs , regarding your rug issue perhaps you could find a large rug that has some hues of eggplant and maybe layer with a shag rug to compliment your pillows similar to this photo. http://bit.ly/1WziJ4v

but knots you are covering the beauty of the rug?

Havingfun I did notice the difference in shades of the colors. I love the floral pillow. I do have one with all those same colors but a different pattern. My green is quite bold, similar to the green in the striped pillow. I added some eggplant pillows identical to the ones you posted to the sofa and I like it a lot better. Today I found a Persian that is very similar to the one that Esmaili suggested but it has the same colors as the Coastal Tranquility’ Transitional Rug you suggested plus just a hint of bluish green. I'm going back and forth between that and an off white one but I do have dogs although they are not in that room very much. I have 24 hours to try it out. So far I like it. With everyone's help I'm getting there. Art that I can afford is going to be my challenge. Maybe I can harness my artist daughter to do something for me.

It's reading too green/blue in the room, too much visual clutter I think and doesn't draw on the color of the chair. And I think it will distract from the art.

I think your room is full of personality. I like the mirror wall; it's unique. I think the only thing I would change is the rug. I would go larger and incorporate some colour. The green suggested above would be very nice.

i get you about the carpet. and your chair in that pic now reads with more red, before it was just dark. the greens in your pillow i see are christmassy, whereas in both those pillows it is more yellow green. like i have said, my computer could be way off. only you can tell.

You're probably right. So now I'm stuck on the rug situation after seeing a pattern on the floor that I didn't like.

funny thing all i had to do was reshow you the rug, the exact colors are all in there.I am going to go shopping for a new rug, see if i can help, be back soon.

I like both of those choices. I'm sure they would look fantastic. I'm just terrified of going with a pattern. The yellowish one would have the most impact but I think I could live with the green/gray one better. Just checked and the begonia leaf doesn't come large enough, just 6x9.

mind is fried, go to esalerugs, they are having a monster of a sale, 8x10 for under $200. i have heard they are good on returns too.

I know what you mean. Thanks for hanging in there with me. I will definitely keep looking. Thanks much!

don't forget to come back and let me see. i will keep my eyes peeled too, though i am not sure what to get but simple gray. what if you went charcoal, that could be cool.

From an artwork standpoint, I would say that the one wall with all the mirrors looks cluttered, and mirrors, while they reflect light from and through the room, don't really reflect you -- your interests, your likes, the things that make you happy. Artwork does that, which is why it's an extremely personal choice, and I encourage you to look for something you like. I also encourage you to consider representational art, showing a landscape, coastal, figurative work, or still life, because these are things we see every day and mean something to us. One large horizontal or figurative piece, or two smaller pieces, set on the diagonal, would fill that space adequately without crowding.

I am attaching Ending the Day on a Good Note, with a nostalgic sense of the living room; The Land of Chief Joseph as a landscape visual; and Opalescent Sea, a coastal work. Regarding a color scheme, it looks like you're keeping your options open and flexible, so a variety of colors from within an artwork could pull successfully into the interior. This gives you the freedom to focus on finding an image that you love, one that you'll enjoy looking at every day.

oh you know, i totally forgot the whole art thing. I am huge on art and encourage as much as possible. I do feel that unless you buy $10 posters, all the other copies are ripping you off and for those prices you can have real art.

so, you can collect it, from thrift stores as i have done - not a glicee in site and rarely spent over $10. or you can buy local. If that does not work, i would go to etsy or saatchiart. both are great and you can find many things for $100-$200. I was working to match the other things, because i believe art is like fixtures, it does not have to match. it just is, you buy it because you love it. now i actually paint my walls to go with my art work, but then i have more art than walls.

my other thing would be make your own, you are talented enough. that is the final part about all art, it is also effected by you and where you hang it. just as you did those lovely mirrors. You could do a current or past journey, someone once framed their first apt key as part of a grouping. i have other ideas if you want.

Regarding the mirrors, i think they are a lovely group. but they show nothing of interest. can you move the shelves? or can we move the mirrors? you want them to reflect the art of something else of interest.

Oooh love have fun's choice! Definitely the best suggestion yet!

    last modified: 10 years ago

Yes I can move the mirrors for sure and have been thinking about putting art there for a while. The shelves are more difficult as they are bolted to the wall and that corner is such a weird angle to the couch I like how they fill that space. I have done my own artwork before, sometimes I blow up pictures and decoupage them to canvases. I've been dying to try my hand at abstract art so I might try that. I have several artists in the family and that was my first career choice. However, I was talked into going into something more profitable-education was my choice but I don't know how much more profitable. So now I'm thinking charcoal for the rug but I haven't totally given up on pattern. I love the impact it makes but I redecorate so often I'm afraid to commit. What do think about buying a small rug and hanging it for art? I love that last rug you picked with yellow/greens/purples. I'll post pics somewhere along the way. Thanks so, so much for the help.

ok, 7x10 is $275. that is even in my budget. put it down then roll it up every fall. have it down as a spring or spring/summer rug.

no need to remove shelves, i just wanted something nicer to reflect in mirrors, i like them, but is there a smaller wall with a place to put something nice across from it?

I like both of the above options. I have made my own overdyed rugs from old wool Persians. They turned out fabulous. Then my daughter stole it and re-dyed it. So I will have to be on the lookout for another old wool Persian if I want to do that again.

I would use a lighter natural colored wool rug with a tribal tone. Warm white with charcoal or brown/black pattern.

hi! fancy meeting you here. long time no see.

pb you said you were going to share how to do that.

I have a really big suggestion for you. maybe tell your daughter to quit shopping your living room?

    last modified: 10 years ago

No kidding. I feel sorry for her because she is a starving artist and lives in an old house with bad heat. I had a wool rug from the 70's that was in bad shape and my husband wanted to throw it out. I had nothing to lose so I used about 4 boxes of teal Rit dye and sprayed it on with an insecticide sprayer. I kept going back and forth until it was dark enough. Then, when my daughter needed rugs she bleached it an redyed it. Except, this time, she just poured buckets of the dye over the rugs and moved it around with a shop broom and left it to dry in the sun. We rinsed them with a hose and let them dry again. She suggested using pot ash to fix the dye but we weren't sure it was really going to work. Not a perfect process but it worked. It's been about 2 years and the dye is still holding.

Pictures on the way if I can get them to upload.

    The beginning.

The rugs on the left are acrylic so we really had to soak them with dye.

Thanks Gray & Walter. What are everyone's thoughts on these?

like you were using a very strong flash. I think perhaps you are on your own. sometimes i just don't get something and this is it. sorry.

I'm seriously leaning toward the Unique Loom Sedona Green Area Rug having fun suggested for summer use. I love the colors.

i am so happy. let in a little sunlite! i have carried it in my pics for a while, at first i was unsure, but then i loved it. but others were insecure. and at the price, you can still get a wonderful winter rug.

did you decide on one of the two above? please do not let me sway you, i am not saying they are awful, and we can't all get everything? i would rather butt out then be trying to unconvince you. and i tell you because, i don't like silent disapproval. then you never know, was it me or the rug?

    last modified: 10 years ago

Ha. I wasn't sure what that comment meant. Those colors just got under my skin. They are so happy. Of course I'm saying that now, I could change my mind in a nano second. I'm not liking either of the 2 above now. They were on my wish list from a while ago. Just trying to rule things out. I need to let things jell for a bit. I have vacation in Phoenix next week so I'll have some time to think about it in a sunny spot.

and i think charcoal is a great choice too. I just like to be totally unique? does that make sense? I no longer keep trellis rugs, i won't discourage them, but i won't stay. I won't deal with kitchens or baths because i no longer like subway. you only have like 3-4 months of summer left. if you hate it then, just make another overdye and put it back, no? In the meantime, that store has some great sales and so the price is often reasonable. and i think your room will be the toast of the town. then if you come back we will look for another really unique idea.

    pbauer thanked havingfun

I agree with you- I am getting tired of the trellis rug look. I think I will go with charcoal for winter and I like the idea of a brighter rug for summer. I, also, like to be unique but I have to be cautious because I know my tastes change in a nano second. Thanks so much for all your help.
