Prices can vary tremendously depending on furniture brands and quality level. Short answer is surely "a lot." That is, a house 1/3 that size can cost many (tens of?) thousands to furnish decently, especially if you need all the large pieces -- dining set, dressers, couches, art. Even from Ikea. But, as nnigrt says, you don't have to do it all at once...

We have a 1200 square foot townhome style condo and just furnished the living/dining room last year. We spent about $9,000. That includes artwork. We are doing the master bedroom next year and I expect to spend around $5,000.

I would say $100k for your 5000 sq ft house. I think the $15K per room estimate above is reasonable. I am spending $17K on the master, $15K on the dining, and $13K on the family room. But I like things made of real wood and made in America, which is not cheap.

That is a large house so the cost for the furniture will be up there. Our house is smaller than that and after 9 years in it, I can't say that I am done. I have all the big pieces that were bought over the years, but I would still need to find a bed that I like.
A good sectional is about 10k. You would want to have the large pieces durable. The rest of them can be cheaper

A family member recently bought 5,300 SF home. Closet organization about $20,000. Upstairs informal lounge/rec room used sofas, TV, etc., from previous house. Ditto for bedrooms. Bought nice but not lavish furniture from Ashley Furniture for living room and breakfast nook. Looks nice, not extravagant.

If you have to outfit the entire house and want quality furniture commensurate with the quality of the house (Ekornes Stressless sofas or better, Sleep Number mattresses or better, customized closet organizers from California Closets or better, etc.), I would budget 20-25% of house price for furniture and decor (whole house interior repainting alone would exceed $5,000).

Many people sink so much money in the house structure they don't adequately budget for furnishing.

really? is this a serious question? you can buy ikea furniture or high end designer furniture. the size of the house is only one variable.

how long is a piece of string? it really depends on your budget, you can design a great, workable home on a shoestring. few people buy a house and immediately furnish it to perfection from scratch. budget according to necessities & what you can get, and save in the future for what you want to get/ improve

30-60% of the cost of the home would give you all new from basic to medium. If you have rarefied tastes in true vintage or antiques and real art, then you can spend 2x the cost of the home.

I furnished my placed and was curious to know how much I spent on it over the span of 5 years since I remodelled. I then chanced across this post on houzz and wanted to share what I found which was most interesting.
Furnishing a home is really costly. You will not realise that the costs add up. $20 here $20 there and before you know it it stacks up to the thousands. I'm nowhere close to complete yet and have not even started furnishing the bedrooms and some other rooms (toilets and the study) that do not get guest walking through those areas.
Working out a budget based on the home's value is deceptive. I could buy a cheap house with massive floor space in the country side and you'd think that the cost of furnishing be 20-30% of that. Or I could purchase a small apartment downtown which could cost loads and then applying that same percentage you'd think you'd need so much. In another example this home I have was purchased 10 years ago. 10 years later, the value of the home has appreciated by double - and this has nothing to do with a staging. I would say that furnishing cost and home value has very little correlation. Floor space or cubic feet would represent it much better.
Having said that, people don't realise that larger square footage would spend more on furnishing per square feet. For example, the cost per square feet above standard 8 X 10 feet floor rug would cost you more per square feet than the per square feet of the 8 X 10 rug. Another example is tV cabinets. To fill in space you normally have to get it custom made as no retailer sells oversized TV cabinets. So on and so forth.
I don't live in the US but if I had to convert the cost I spent per square feet to USD it would be USD75 per square feet and we are looking at a 240 square feet living room with 9 feet high walls. This included accent/spot lights, TV cabinet, sofas and single seater chair, ottoman, TV and sound system, floor lamp, rug, artwork and credenza, blinds, pots and plants and the miscellaneous knick knacks ie from empty area to furnished excluding any remodelling work such as painting, knocking down of walls, plaster ceilings. Of course it didn't just come all at one go. But even if you purchased it slowly over the years you'd find yourself coming up close to that cost. I even tried to benchmark this to my dining room that had 75 square feet and the dining table, lights and chairs and rug came up to USD75 per square feet.
I don't even own designer products only replicas. So I would expect this cost to be higher if you went designer range. Most of my artwork was done by myself and the cost of the framing or contracting to make the stands cost more than the artwork itself. I suspect that if I were to purchase artwork made by artist it would be even more expensive.

By the way I did not pay for a designer. So if you did the cost per square feet could be higher.

I don't think you have to spend a fortune on a home to make it look good and make it comfortable. So often people buy a high end furniture piece, when all they really needed was a similar piece at a reasonable price. So, it all depends on your taste.

I agree with 111ideahound. However good things and quality items come at a price. Even if not designer. If it were me I would like to settle into a small home. 1000 sq feet would be just nice

I have been selling furniture for about 16 years at an Arhaus/Kittles price level. Most clients have spent about $10,000- $15,000 per room on furniture alone. I would then add for rugs, art and accessories separately at about $5000 per room. Then figure pricing for window treatments which is an extreme variable depending on your taste and needs. At 5000sq/ft I would highly recommend using a design professional that you trust. It will save you money in the long run. Good luck and have fun!

How much would it cost to furnish a 3000 square foot heated house?

3.2M if you want fine art and high end designer antiques. You can spend 100K on a table alone. Or, $100 from Ikea. Spend your money as appropriate to your neighborhood, but always start with the foundation pieces of each room in as high of a quality as you can afford. The living room sofa, the dining room table, the master bedroom bed. If your ''15K'' per room barely covers the main high quality piece, then look to vintage and used pieces to flesh out the room.

based on comments... ~$12-$20/sq ft . ... create an excel sheet and based on percentage of square footage, that could give a break down of how much to spend on each room. Write down each furniture piece you're thinking of buying and how much the average price is that you're seeing of the furniture pieces you like. toggle the percentages and adjust your taste accordingly

(note that the kitchen probably doesn't need much decor, so you can definitely invest more in the living & dining spaces.. it would suck to see those areas be an eye-sore. the first thing you see when you get into the house.)
